UPMC vs. Cleveland Clinic vs. VCU

Can anyone rank these places based on likelihood of getting fellowships at the top most ranked places? Would like to do fellowships out west. (southern CA).

Is it wise to look at faculty list to see who came from a place where you may like to do your fellowship?
Suggestions?

I believe UPMC has the best reputation, but have no 1st hand experience. Another thing to consider: some of the fellowships "out west" have some regional bias, are you also applying to programs in that geographical location?

Also, I am sure having connections to faculty from your desired fellowship institution can be of great benefit....it seems like a pretty small well connected community out there- especially in academics!

1- Generally speaking fellowships are relatively easy to get. If you go to any of these programs there should not be a problem.

2- For fellowship regional bias is really important. For example if you go to even a small Cali program, you will most likely find a fellowship in one of the big west programs.

3- For job hunting, people consider residency and fellowship both. Nothing beats connection.

4- I will put Cleveland Clinic >= UPMC> VCU. There is not really difference among them. You will be in the same boat in all of them.

5- If you have certainly decided to live in West in future, Rank west programs above the mid west programs. Breaking into coastal markets is difficult for people coming from even top notch mid west programs.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a single interview at CA programs since I applied to big programs. Stanford, UCLA, UCSD, USC, UCSF.

My stats are certainly above these program's averages. 260+. But, I come from a not so great school.
This is why I ask. So, it is important for me to look at the faculty list to see if they are from the west coast. Because it's all about connections like you all just said.

Just keep in mind that you'll start residency in July 2014 and until a lot can change in terms of faculty (retiring, changing jobs, etc), and you'll be there for 4 years after and things could change further. It's not a bad idea to see which program has more faculty with Cali ties but I wouldn't hedge all your future bets on that fact.

Not one iota. I had excellent letters though. Let me tell you upfront that top places almost require some sort of research. At some big name places many people were MD PhDs or had taken years off. Many did research alongside med school bc they were research-oriented schools.

I think it is more because of regional bias than research. I would then go to the best place I can to land a fellowship in west which should not be a big deal.

I think the likelihood thing makes it a wash. I'm yet to interview at a program that has had a bad fellowship list and most of the people who really gunned for a spot seemed able to get them, regardless of the program level. I interviewed at 2 of the 3 and do have one of them a few spots above the other, but they were both great programs and the cities had similar feels to me.

I distinctively remember someone from UPMC having a fellowship in CA. I can't remember about the others off the top of my head, but there is usually one or two.



and regional bias is huge. I got some strong interviews outside my region, but not many.

nope. Regional bias is very big. This is why I would like to break into the CA barrier.
