  1. Pre-Dental
I am a female and I am nervous about moving in with another roommate. I've been living with my boyfriend since I was 19 and he has to wait a year to move in with me for dental school because he is finishing school.

I cannot make up my mind if I want one other female roommate or multiple roommates. I am just nervous that I will have a lot of studying to do and I won't be able to do it in my apartment because it's too loud with a roommate. I personally hate the library..it's just really hard for me to study there.

Is anyone else worried about the living situation? Any opinions or tips on the whole living situation? Thank you.😍

First off welcome to SDN.

As someone who can't study in a library as well I would suggest you get one roommate, two at most. Make sure the roommate is a student (preferably in d-school) who has commitments that similar to your own. I have 3 roommates (all pre-something) and we get that school comes first but it's tough to study when everyone in your apartment just wants to relax.

But if it's possible, a studio sounds perfect for your situation.

A studio would be best for me, but I am seriously afraid of being alone in an apartment. If for some reason I have to sleep in a house alone, I just never get rest and it freaks me out.

I'm thinking about 1 other female roommate, but most of the girls want to live with more than just one other girl, more like 4 girls..so it is going to be hard to find 1 person to room with me.

Oh and Thank you for the welcome! I am new to this site.

I have been in your situation, almost identically.

I've been a scaredy cat, so I had a few friends move in with me, when I got my own place for the first time.

...Now, I live by myself and I love it.
If you're not in a relationship and are comfortable being alone (in general, not "afraid), then I suggest living alone as a student.

Even if you think you are afraid (I was), just try it out! It;s sooo worth it.

If you live in a safe area and are concerned with your living situation interfering with your educational situation, then I highly recommend living by yourself. That is, if you are secure being alone. 1> No cleaning up after others (I never thought this would bother me, but other ppls mess completely agitates me and I have to clean it up or else I go mad) 2> The fridge is yours and yours alone (I am a health freak, so having my own stuff is great w/o any interference) 3> You have peace and quiet when you want (if you like to socialize, just ask ppl over or leave to hang out.)

It's so nice to hear that I'm not the only scared person lol. I study A LOT. I have a lot of friends that don't study that much and get decent grades, but that's just not what works for me. I have to study all the time and really know the material or I'll do really poorly. Yeah, I think I'm just going to live by myself because my boyfriend only lives 1 1/2 hours away and if it's really bad, I know that my family isn't that far away. Any tips for living alone that helped you? I found these beeping things that you put on your window and they beep when someone opens them. haha 🙂 I told you, I'm scared!

Well if you are in-sight of neighbors, definately get blinds/curtains. Also, if you are home enough and are a dog-lover, I highly recommend getting a little pup 🙂 (or a big one). They keep you company, and they will bark if anyone comes near. Also, get to know your close neighbors if you don't already. That way, you have someone to go to for any needs, it will help you feel more secure... For like the first couple weeks of living alone I locked my bedroom door, but now after a couple months I'm completely comfortable living alone and enjoy it a lot!

If you don't live in that safe of an area, then I'd say go ahead and get those alarms that go off when your window is open. Just do whatever makes you most comfortable 🙂

Aw thank you! You're so sweet. 🙂 I want a dog so bad, but it's a big commitment and I don't know if I am ready to have one in dental school. I'm going to my state school so I feel like I can splurge on a safe apartment! The city is pretty suburban, but kind of in the middle of nowhere lol. I have decided to definitely live alone! Thanks for helping me make my decision. 😀

Awesome to know people out there share my concerns!

I would prefer living alone as opposed to with a whole bunch of people, but safety is definitely a huge concern! Especially since the schools I want to go to happen to be in cities that don't exactly have the best reputation. =/

I used to feel the exact same way about living by myself and have put up with dealing with roommates because of it. If you're a cat person, get a cat. I know it sounds silly because unlike dogs, cats can't really protect you, but theres something to be said about having another living thing around the apartment that makes me at least feel a lot more safe. Plus, cat's can pretty much take care of themselves and after a long day of class and studying, having a cat to cuddle with can really take away some of the stress! 🙂

The cat/dog idea is such a good suggestion. BUT I completely forgot that my boyfriend is super allergic to pet dander and cat hair lol. He's coming up to visit me and moving up with me my second year of dental school. There's really no way that I could get one.

Sorta just encountered the same situation last yr , I lived with roomates my first 3 yrs of undergrad ( all of them business majors that studies for like umm maybe 5 hrs before there exam) , so last yr i moved in alone and my grades were alot better.. Also, it was alot harder to hang out with my gf when I had roomates bc of lack of space in living room, kitchen, etc.. Probably will live alone unless I find a really neat person in dental school because I cant stand slobs
