Hypothetical situation:
If I have a roommate that smokes weed in his room, and he gets caught somehow, am I likely to get into trouble?

I've never tried it, nor would I ever. I don't really have a problem with it though. BUT....I just don't want to get in trouble in any way if he ever gets caught.

I know a bunch of med students that smoke pot, but honestly, I'm not sure I like taking the risk if I'm not even doing anything wrong.

Thoughts?

go over there and hit that

Step 1: Stop what you're doing right now.
Step 2: Revel in the fact that your roommate has weed and might offer it to you for free.
Step 3: Blow your mind. Might as well try it now while there are patient lives riding on your shoulders.

Yes. It is a crime for you to live with someone who smokes weed. You should turn yourself in immediately and accept your dismissal from medical school seeing as you've already committed said crime.

It's weed. You're fine. Find out when you don't have a drug test, try it, profit? Might make you relax and not make threads like this.

The hope of seeing one of your posts is basically the only reason I still go on SDN 😀

Politics 101:
If you roomie ever gets caught, use the "The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing" defense, or, as Ollie North calls it "plausible deniability".

Pot is almost harmless, but stays in your body for a loooooong time. With today's drug test, you can even get positive results days after attending a NIN concert, just from 2nd hand smoke!

Just imagine what will happen at an Allman brothers show. Your shirt will practically tie dye itself.

I was in the same boat earlier this year. I Came back from being abroad and my roommate decided to start selling pot while I was gone!!!!

I know a guy whose roommate got caught dealing and he had to take "drug classes" even though it was his roommate who got caught.

It's not really a big deal, just make sure everything is legit. Getting caught sucks; dealing with the system is even worse.

If your worried and looking to move out, i'm willing to take the hit for you (literally) and move in

Marijuana is a gateway drug. Your roommate will be slinging crack rocks to preschoolers in 2 weeks, and you will go to jail when you get caught b/c your inaction makes you complicit. You'll be kicked out of school and have to re-apply DO.

Don't forget the Republican party will never forgive you

Seriously, I would kick him out and turn him in. 2nd hand smoke shows up on drug tests fyi.

That depends.

If that were the case all the time, I should've failed a lot of drug tests.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone get busted for blazing in their apartment or house unless they have a small forest worth, a habit of getting drunk and beating on their significant other (which wouldn't happen if they were stoned...just too much work....man) or anything else as stupid. If you come home and it looks like Chief Tokesumgreen is sending smoke signals from 20 feet away I might have a chat.

Every person I know who got busted with pot was always being stupid and driving around with it or something equally as idiotic.

A fool is someone who knowingly puts his future in another man's unscrupulous hands.

You are now an adult, and hopefully intelligent enough to understand the possible implications of your roommate's actions in your life.

Personally, I would take action and make him wish he had never met me.

This turned into quite the funny thread.

I have nothing against weed, but I wouldn't tolerate pot smoking from a roommate in our apartment. It smells like ****.

Would rather have a cigarette smoker. At least the smoke outside.

Smoking in their room, if it in NO WAY affected my stuff, would be ok with me.

But yes- I agree I wouldn't want like an ounce just laying out on the counter and some dude taking bong rips in the living room all day lol

No. You're highly unlikely to get in trouble.

That being said, if your roommate blazes in the common area and you have a problem with it, you have a right to have him stop smoking inside or ask him to leave. Its common courtesy and you definitely deserve that if you wish. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

marijuana is 'practically' legal now in some states and in many, only a simple fine of 100 bucks. Unless the roommate is dealing the OP will be fine.

also stating that you would take action and make him wish he had never met you is a bit harsh. You sound like a wannabe superhero.

You should lighten up...sounds like you're a real buzzkill. Maybe you could use some chronic yourself...

if you're really worried about it tell him to keep it in his room and not in the common areas. Then if your apartment gets raided DENY DENY DENY.

Oh and 2nd hand smoke shouldn't show up in a piss test. Had a pt try to claim that her test came back positive not because she was smoking while pregnant, but she just hung around people who were. The doc was like uuuuuhhhhh :meanie: no.

1. He's not going to get caught so long as he's doing it in his room. This is especially the case if you guys are renting an apartment, rather than living in a dorm.

2. Even if he does, it's VERY unlikely you'll get in trouble.

3. If the smell bothers you, ask him to do it elsewhere; or better yet, convince him to invest in a vape - the smell is not nearly as noticeable and he'll get more bang for his buck (while substantially decreasing the amount of carcinogens he's inhaling!).

4. You should give it a shot. Weed definitely falls under the category of "at least trying once or twice in my lifetime." It's pretty harmless, very relaxing and can be pretty fun when chilling with your friends.

Regardless of its "practical" legality and "harmlessness," it's still illegal. While the legal ramifications may be minor that says nothing of the impact a drug charge could have on medical licensing, which is the whole point of med school and residency.

I might be in the minority here, but I think that the OP has a serious concern. Regardless of what your opinion about pot is, it is illegal and its possession is subject to stiff penalties in many states. If the lease is in your name, tell your roomate that he cannot keep his pot in your apartment--period. The last thing you need is a possession charge.

If you are found guilty of a drug charge, your ability to secure federal financial aid will be severely compromised, which means that you may not be able to complete medical school. Moreover, drug charges may preclude you from applying for a medical license, even if you graduate after losing your student loans.

If you allow your room mate to keep pot in your apartment, you are exposing yourself to these risks. Sure, if he's caught, you might try to tell the cops that the pot isn't yours, but do you want to risk the chance that they might not believe you? What if you get the one officer gunning for convictions? If you're not even enjoying the pot, why take that risk at all? It's awfully selfish of your roomate to jeopardize your future, just so he can have his fix.

P.S. It is absolutely impossible to test positive on a drug screen due to secondhand smoke exposure. This has been proven! Still, allowing your roomate to smoke in your apartment is a bad idea.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time. It just isn't worth the risk, however small.

If you're stupid enough to get caught smoking weed then you're unfit to be a doctor anyway
