Rosalind BMS Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got accepted today but I'm waitlisted at Drexel and Tufts and still waiting to hear back from Loyola and BU. Any suggestions?

Hi...Is the SMP (special masters program) at Rosalind Franklin whats listed on this page?? http://www.rosalindfranklin.edu/dnn/chp/home/CHP/IHS/Biomed/tabid/1469/Default.aspx

I thought the SMP at Rosalond Franklin you only take classes the the medical students? but the Masters in Biomedical Sciences at rosalind franklin you'r taking classes with podiatry students as well? Is there another different SMP program at rosalind franklin?

thanks

What happened with this years BMS class? How many started and finished the program? How many people made it into CMS?

Does anyone know what they are referring to in the 2nd essay on the application about distance learning classes?

I have just been accepted to both programs ! I'm elated, however I have one major question...which one ?

Can anyone who has been through the programs weigh in and help me make a decision ?

Pros vs cons ?

I talked to Whitney Kochenower of RFU and she said roughly 50% of the BMS class got into CMS last year. Sounds very promising, however I've read a lot of negative posts regarding the the program.

Drexel IMS seems like a great program too. However, it is a true Post bac program and only gives out degrees after 2 years of schooling, whereas RFU is a one year masters program.

My main concerns:

1. which school has the better percentage of students getting into their linked medical school after one year ?

2. which school has the better percentage of students getting into med school period after one year ?

Thanks !

Thats 50% of people who finished the program and 1/3 of those who began the program for RFU? Most of the 1/3 who left the program failed out and everyone who started the program thought they were going to be a top student.....doesnt always work out that way.

The 2/3 who didnt make it are left worse of than they started...which is the BIGGEST/HUGGEST drawback of the program. 1/3 greatly benefit from the program while 2/3 actually SUFFER from the program

My opinions of SMPs is that they are overall great programs. You have to research them very well to look at all aspects of the program and not just which ones will get you into any med school the fastest. When starting an SMP you should be comfortable with the idea that you may need to take 2 years to get into med school and you should look at programs that will set you up best to get into med school in the next 2 years and not thee very next year. If you dont directly make it into the affiliated school, make sure you are in a program that will set you upto well to reapply the next application cycle. After going through an SMP or a year of med school you will realize that the extra year you may have been worried about will actually be a refreshing thing to look forward to.....

For example RFU gets 1/3 of people into med school the next year and for 2/3 it sets them back 2 or 3 years. Georgetown gets 1/4 into GT med the next year and gets another 1/4 to 1/3 into some kind of a med school the same year. So over half get into a med school that same year and the other half are setup very well to reapply because of a better grade layout (bc of less grade deflation, taking a fewer number of med school courses, fairer grading systems).

RFU was also a good experience for me even though I didnt get in and I am happy with the school that I go to now. But its mainly bc I am back with my GF and we get to go to school together where I was unhappy at RFU without her. The program actually hurt most people though, and most people who are reapply arent pleased with RFU and their major grade deflation.

Before RFU I was kinda just getting too laid back about getting into med school and RFU acted like a bootcamp sort of experience and straightened me out...thank you RFU but other than that RFU wasnt a good experience. RFU made me a bit more active and aggressive about the whole med school thing and my career in general.
