Ross SVM- September 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck tomorrow!
I went to that website also, before my interview, and got lots of great advice. Best thing is to be yourself; be positive; let them know you can handle rigorous studies in a developing country and that you are adaptable.
I did get one or two curve balls - e.g. "Do you have any regrets?"
I got so nervous that my mouth went dry. Bring a bottle of water just in case.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi everyone! I am new to SDN. I didn't get into Western, UF, UCDavis, or Washington State for fall 08 so I applied to Ross and I have an interview this Thursday. Any advice on questions asked or what to brush up on? Also, do most of you guys have vet tech experience before heading off to vet school? I don't know (if I get in) if I should go right away in September (I have only worked as a doctor's assistant at a VCA for a year) or if I should defer to May admission so that I can get trained as a vet tech for several months. Any advice? Thanks!

Their interview questions are generally pretty basic, but I suppose it also depends on who you interview with. The only question they asked that I wasn't really prepared for was "What was the greatest moment in your life?" The sad thing is I don't even remember what I said (my interview was about a month and a half ago), but I did recover quickly and managed to get out an intelligent answer.

Good luck! You'll soon be waiting around to hear with the rest of us. 😀

Little bit of info for zpinkpanther –

OK, so I hesitated posting this update at all because I don’t think anyone really knows what the committee schedule is, but I’m climbing the walls and I know you are too.

So here’s what’s coming out of the Edison office as far as timelines –
1) If you call the office (another totally flipped out applicant called 2 days ago) they will tell you 2-3 weeks before notification.
2) BUT….I emailed my interviewer 2 nights ago and he said that the committee is back in session this week and he is hoping for the next round of decisions to come in Friday (tomorrow) or Monday.

Hope that this helps a little – I find it better to get any nugget of info rather than nothing.

That does help, thanks! I'd also rather have a little speck of info than none at all. At this point, I sometimes think I'd rather have a rejection than have to wait any longer. But if it's an acceptance, I think it would be worth it. Thanks for wishing me luck with finals before, too. Good luck with yours- if you have them, that is. 🙂 This waiting to hear about vet school thing is making them so much harder to concentrate on... 😳

Hi Guys,
I just started Ross and they let in some people who I think don't have a chance in hell here. There is a girl in vet prep who admits having a 2.5 GPA!! I wouldn't stress too much about it- I'm sure you will get in. They let in someone 4 days before orientation, and she got here on time, and is doing fine!!!

So far, I really like it. But exams start next week....

Wow, exams already? Haven't you only been there a week or so? Good luck on exams and I hope you're enjoying school!

OMG mine says that, too! The sad thing is that I got a phone call form Milena saying that my admissions decision had come through- except I was out celebrating the end of finals when she called, so she left a message on my machine. She said I could call until 5 pm and I didn't get the message until 7:30 pm and now they don't open again til Monday and OMG I'm freaking out! 😱 Whew, gotta breathe... I'm off to get a paper bag...

God, I'm such a spaz. 🙄

Aw, that sucks! I wish I had known she might call, I probably would have stayed home, too. I guess all we can do now is think happy thoughts and pray for Monday morning to come quickly! Let me know when you hear, too! :luck:

Good luck guys. 🙂

Thank you!

By the way, I don't think I've ever commented on your avatar... that is a beautiful dog. A corgi, right? I love corgis and I hope when I'm ready to get a dog I can find one with different color eyes, since I also love different colored eyes. 😀

She just happened to pop up on a flyer at the vet school one day. I took it down and stuffed it in my pocket as soon as I saw it. "MINE!"

She came with kidney/bladder stones though... but also, she's very obedient, loves to walk and play, loves her hedgehog toy (And goes searching madly for it if you ask her, "Hedgehog?") and is an all around sweetie pie wiggle butt. So even if she does need that $1500 sugery, she's worth it.

Yes, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. With heterochromia iridis. Not too common in Corgis, and definitely caught my eye in the flyer, but I'm pretty sure she'd be awesome with two brown eyes as well.

Oh, and her name is Chloe. 🙂

i was reading another thread about having a car for vet school and this sparked my question for my fellow Ross students......

do you need to have a car while attending Ross for convenience? do you think it is a necessitY?

Someone I "knew" said that a bunch of the students kinda shared this one car while they were there. I'd imagine that getting a car while on the island might be a bit difficult... but hey, I have no idea. 🙂

Did you hear about that "one stop shopping" when you get down there? Apparently the school helps you get set up with all essentials including a car. I think you need one, or need to share one, when you move off campus. Word is – it's kinda scary driving on those roads though.

LOVE twelvetiger's Corgi also!!!! Scrumptious

Adorable! And she does sound like she was totally worth it. I'm sure she'd be awesome with 2 brown eyes, too, since most of the pems I've met have been great, but the blue one just makes her a bit more unique. You're so lucky you found that flyer! 🙂

Yikes, I wasn't planning on getting a car- I was hoping a bike or scooter or something similar would do. Though I guess sharing one wouldn't be as expensive. The "one-stop shopping" thing sounds quite helpful, though, since we'll need sheets, pillows, pots, pans, and other assorted necessities.

Of course, I shouldn't be talking about this because I feel like I'm jinxing myself, since I don't even know the decision yet! I really should go finish my homework and not look at SDN, but I'm an info junkie. 🙄

Good luck tomorrow.:luck::luck::luck: I have my fingers crossed for both of you, but I have a feeling you'll be hearing some good news!

I'M IN!!!
thanks everyone for your well wishes! It really made me feel great.
OK zpinkpanther - I'm waiting for your post so that we can cyber hug!

Congrats you guys!! I wish you all the best! :hardy: 😀 :luck:

For those of us who will be applying to Ross (and SGU) in the near future, would you mind posting your stats?!?

Congrats zpinkpanther!!! I knew you'd get in😀

:clap:Congratulations to you both! I think a lot more SDNers will be looking into Ross now that we're hearing a lot about it from everyone. I know I just added it to my list for next cycle.

got an email looking for my seat deposit already!

Thank you! And thank you to sheltergirl and cateyes and everyone else!

Sure, I'll post my stats! They're not so great, but hopefully they'll inspire someone whose GPA isn't so stellar...

(22 years old, first time applicant)
GPA (before this semester gets factored in): 3.07 (BA in French + 1 year of finishing up prereqs); not sure about science GPA because I never bothered, but I'm sure it's higher because I got some really lousy grades in some history and politics classes.
GRE: 1310 (730 Quant, 580 Verbal. 5.5 analytical if that makes a difference...)
Volunteer Experience: 1) at the Baltimore Zoo for about 10 years (2 summers in middle/high school and Saturdays after that). I volunteer with the Animal Embassy, which is an area of the Education Department that houses a bunch of different animals that go out to schools and on the grounds for education purposes; there's a prehensile tail porcupine, snakes, parrots, chinese alligator, penguins, a kinkajou (sp?), and a few raptors to name a few. 2) I also volunteered at the local animal shelter throughout college.
Work experience: 1) weeknights, weekends during last two years of high school (plus summer after 1st year of college) at a 24-hour, multi-doctor (10+) practice with 2 doctors that handled exotics/wildlife cases. 2) about 2 years at a small single-doctor practice (except for another doc that works one day per week). Total tech experience= ~4,000 hrs

I think that's about it; any questions, feel free to ask here or PM me.

congrats!!!!!!!!!!😀

Huggin...huggin....hugs....big hugs!

got an email looking for my seat deposit already!

*super duper biggest hugs EVER!*

That happened to me, too! Literally the minute after I hung up the phone with Milena (who told me that the packet I'm getting in the mail will tell me about deposits and whatnot), I got an e-mail saying that they're STILL waiting for my seat deposit and I was thinking, "sheesh, gimme a break, I just found out a minute ago that I actually got in!" Since you got the same e-mail today, I guess they're just sending them all out today, but it's really funny that I received it right after I got off the phone with her.

SQUEEEE! I am so happy! Now I have to stop being a spaz and concentrate on school for a couple more days so I don't flunk biochem and lose my acceptance... 🙄

Thank you zpinkpanther! If you can do it, I can at least try!! (I'm inspired, since my GPA is pretty much the same as yours.)

Congrats zpinkpanther and Jeterfan!😀

Hi Rachroo!
I would say to go for it! Check out the vet prep program also if you’re worried about your GPA – but you might be in better shape than you think.

My stats:
Non-trad student pursuing a 2nd career in vet med. No time to waste retaking GRE’s 5X!!
B.S. Animal Science
GPA – 3.44
Science and Math GPA– 3.5
GRE – 1050 (wow, that’s terrible! What the hell is that?!!! 😱)
Experience:
1) small animal 600hrs
2) large animal 150hrs
3) research 3,000hrs (got really lucky and landed an internship then job – got to do a thousand rat/mice surgeries)

Hey all!
Just got a letter of acceptance from Ross. I applied for Sept 08, interviewed mid-May, and got accepted for January 09 (and was offered to be waitlisted for Sept's class).
It took 4-5 weeks to hear the decision, but at least it was an acceptance!
Good luck to everyone starting this fall, and perhaps we'll meet in January!

Welcome and congrats! Don't worry, my acceptance took about 6 weeks I think. Anyway, I'm starting down there in September, so feel free to ask/PM me with any questions once I'm down there. See you on the island in January, then! 😀

hey all! im applying to ross and sgu this app cycle and was wondering if anyone had any stats on avg. gpa and % admittance rates?

GREAT! Thanks for the link!!

I'm having trouble with the space allotted for the online application -- It states "Please do not exceed two lines of text. Any text after two lines will not be captured." which NOT at all enough space for me. Any tips? Did you use the last page (Additional Information) to put in more information? I feel that since they look more at experiences, etc. rather than gpa, isn't it odd that they don't allow more space for those sections?

Any response would be great!

Wow! All of the acceptances are great news! I'm so happy for everyone! Congratulations 🙂

I still need to take my GRE 😳 I get chills knowing that I will one day join in on the fun.

I know, I know! Me too!! Especially after filling out state school applications-I was in a panic, but don't worry. I abbreviated as much as possible and cut out non essential words without making it sound like a text. I also used all of the additional space at the end to expand. I think I wrote something like ".....while I understand that my GRE scores are less than competitive, I have unique research experience that....." and I listed a boat load of stuff that I couldn't fit in the alloted experience section. Can't remember exactly how I worded it, but I tried to acknowledge something not great on my application with a short explaination (not excuse sounding) then hit 'em with lots of positive stuff.

I also brought a resume to the interview.

What semester are you applying for?

Also, congrats to 2012VMDhopeful !! See you in St. Kitts! 😀

Yea, i was like "what??!?" only two lines! what do you think of putting in more descriptive details for the experiences-- like the descriptions/hours/etc like the vmcas application in the additional info section? I typed everything into a word doc. so i was thinking i can just copy all that info and stick it in there since that section seems to not have a limit on wording...but would it be a little redundant? I'm just not comfortable with putting allll of my experiences in 2 lines, but i don't want to be too descriptive... I think I will also put in the "explanation" type piece that you did.

bringing in a resume sounds like a good idea also

im applying for sept. 09...

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yeah, I did everything on word too. Go with your gut and highlight all the stuff that makes you shine. My feeling is that it's not redundant if it is good, but maybe reword it a little - e.g. under small animal experience I listed "patient history" and under additional I wanted to highlight good client interaction, so I expanded on patient history.
Be a little careful in that the additional space is NOT endless. It's a good amount of space (don't remember exactly how much) though. Preview it. I remember that I lost my last sentance.

Hope this helps a little.

thanks jeterfan -- all of your advice and tips have been very helpful! congrats on your acceptance 🙂

I know I'm a little late chiming in, but I always have to open my big mouth anyway... 😀

I didn't remember that they only allowed two lines- that's crazy! I guess this was the online application? I guess my advice (besides what Jeterfan already said) would be to include things that don't fit in there in your personal statement. Good luck with the application process! :luck:

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I'm totally psyched because I bought my stethoscope today! I'm such a dork! 🙄😀
