Rotation Spin RESULTS!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh lord what did they teach you in pharmacology... You make Debra Goff sad.. not that it will make me sad.
You're keen an didactic studies yet not so much on real life application of drugs. Not that you're interested in any of this, but are you a retail guy?

nope, clinical guy. Sorry, we didn't specifically study the clearance of tobra in either PK, therapeutics, or pharmacology. We did spent a lot of time on Gent, but blew through the other less used AG. So far therapeutics haven't used tobra in any of the treatments either. Hey, I don't make the lectures.

How are tobra and gent different? What's the typical trend of susceptibilities of tobra vs. Gent in your local hospitals?

I intern in the ER and we only use Gent in ED sat. No tobra here. I know they have a few bottles down in the basement, but I hardly ever see one gets dispensed even out of there.

I looked back on my pharmacology notes, there was only 1 line on Tobra (I kid you not, the prof had only 1 line of notes on this drug). Here is verbatim of that lonely line: Tobramycin: (2x Gentamycin) vs. Pseudomonas.

when you get a chance, take a peek at your antibiogram and compare the susceptibility differences between Tob and Gent. There's a reason why inhalation AG is Tobramycin and not Gent.

Surely as a P3 you know how to research a drug beyond pharmacology notes...hopefully.

I can, but why right now? I've trying to relax after sitting in classroom from 8:30 Am to 7:30 PM. I would rather look up stuff that's more useful on my next midterm.

Wooo Spiriva 5 weeks to see whether nyukular is for meeeezzz. I just hope I don't leave glowing. On the other end I spend 5 weeks in Annapolis helping legislators see how great we are. 😉

Alas no ID or Peds, but hey got a lot of good rotations, including one down under. Spending 5 weeks in Melbourne in November/December. Life is good!

Awesome! What pharmacy are you rotating at?

BTW liquido...I got the contact info for you for Orlando. I'll get it to you tomorrow; left it at work on my desk! 😉

University of Maryland Med Center (Dr. Geyser-Stoops). I did a "hey here's stuff outside of community and institutional dispensing roles" it seemed interesting. Apparently it was interesting enough to make it to the top 5 this year. 😉

Was there anything special you had to do to get the international rotation? I am starting P1 at MWU-CPG in June, but wanted to find out as much about this as I could. If you have any tips for me it would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly I didn't set up the rotation, it was set up by a current 4th year. However, I would start NOW and look for contacts within the Public Health/Internation Health portion of the school and talk with your rotations coordinator. The professors can usually suggest places to contact about setting up a rotation and the coordinator well let you know how to get "out of program" rotations.

Is there anyone else who has done or who plans to do an international rotation? I'm looking for all the information I can get on setting this up.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Australia is common at my school. You will be able to speak with your rotation coordinator when you start, they will have more info.

Australia is dieing for pharmacists, last time I checked. New Zealand likes to compete with Australia, so they're in need too whether it's genuine or by default.

I've looked all over the place for pharmacy jobs. It's a past time of mine. 😛

😵 Well, if New Zealand is hiring by the time I graduate that would be perfect. I've always wanted to live in the land of the Kiwis.

LOL I think the 2nd video is interesting. It would be extremely interesting to work in NZ. 😀 Thanks for the links and videos. This made my night, heh.

That's great to hear! I'm happy to have made your night. 🙂

The first one reminds me of Abercrombie or American Eagle, but in a realistic sort of way. The second video is cool, because you can dig relatively deep into their culture without having to watch a long documentary or reading a National Geographic and hear their cool accents!
You know, all of their videos are interesting. You could probably stay on youtube for a few hours without getting bored.

Flying to New Zealand is expensive, though. Perhaps the prices are lower right now, but it was thousands of dollars whenever I was snooping around almost a year ago. It's affordable to fly back and forth to Australia if that's any consultation.

Haha, yeah traveling between Australia and NZ is pretty affordable; plenty of people do it for business. I'm thinking if I go there to work, it'd be worth it. Plus, I hear the nation essentially shuts down at a part of the day so people can spend time with their families and such... how awesome is that? 😀

If I have the means... I definitely want to go there this summer.

It's looking good. Prices are down as compared to a year ago. http://www.sidestep.com/s/flights.jsp?searchid=BEetGh&completed=true

Thanks for this info, I'll be sure to talk with our coordinator as soon as I can.

If I were to go, I would probably consider going as part of like a "volunteer" program so that housing and food would not be as much of an issue. Plus, it'd be nice to do something productive and progressive for a change.
The exchange rate is in your favor. It's been as good as 1 US dollar for 2 NZ dollars recently. http://www.x-rates.com/d/NZD/USD/graph120.html
If you exchange it at a good time, then you could double your money or cut comparable living costs in half. It would be awesome however you look at it.

Trust me... I've already thought this whole thing through whenever I was considering med. school after pharmacy school. (They need pathologists like we all need to win the lottery- big time!)

If my heart doesn't settle on a particular place, then I might consider NZ again. It's gorgeous!

I'm looking into the US northeast right now. There are a few states that are in need of pharmacists. Plus, I need a break from La.

Haha that's my thinking as well. If I have the opportunity to work and live there, I would want to. I'll have to figure out the loan repayments and finances when the time comes but if there's a way, I will gooooooooo. 😀

I really hope you get the chance to go. :xf:

Good night! It was fun chatting. 🙂

I'll be honest... I've only watched part of the NIT so I have no idea how Carolina and Michigan State played throughout the Sweet 16.

So what schools offer rotations in the pharmaceutical industry's departments like Medical Affairs / Marketing and/or Medical Communications / Drug Info?
School and company names would be very helpful!

Rutgers does

UIC offers it through Abbott, Takeda, and Ovation Pharmaceuticals.

Check out Eli Lilly. I think if you good enough you can set up a rotation with them even if you are out-of-state. I was thinking about doing it before but right now I'm leaning towards patient care type of residency post-graduation, so no point of putting this much effort in setting up something that I will probably not pursue in the future.

USC has pharmecon, though couldn't say what companies. Pretty sure our drug info is through Kaiser, though there may be others. I know we're pretty tight with Amgen, but other than that??

Does Jeff McComb still run the PE dept? He was pretty tight with Kaiser.
I called him an A-hole during 2nd year Biostat... he didn't appreciate it.

I think Joel Hay's running the PE dept, but McCombs "T-rex" is still running Biostats, at least the stats half. Steve Chen is running the Drug Info half. Not sure if he was here when you were. Pretty cool guy. Nichols is teaching 3rd year PE.

This is my first thread to be threadjacked twice... I'm honored 😳

Thanks Spiriva 😉
Back on track... Wow! I got all of my preferences (only 1 or 2 were secondary choices), and the institutional, amb care, and internal medicine rotations are in the fall. 😀 Excellent!!!

ETA: No drive-thru pharmacies, a specialty hospital, an LTC, a teaching hospital, and two more hospitals that I am VERY familiar with- thankfully. 😀
😍
