Your time is more your own during the basic science years. You can decide if you are going to lecture or studying from home, when, and how much. And very few people snap at you, expect you to know things off the top of your head. So that makes it a lot easier. But you spend more time running around actually doing things during the rotations, and very little time in a classroom, so most people find them better.

Both are tough but in different ways. Memorizing a lot of basic science facts sucks and it takes discipline to sit and study all day. When you start your rotations you have to learn to apply all the stuff you learned your first two years and learn to take care of patients. It's hard but it is way, way better than sitting and studying. So I wouldn't say that med school gets easier, it just gets better!

Different strokes for different folks.

The rumors are true. Some of the top people in pre-clinical years melt down when taken out of the classroom. (It's happening right now in my school.) And some people are energized by it and feel more at home where they may have struggled with basic science stuff.
