Heard from my school's health profession's advisor that applying to both programs shouldn't be an issue. Is this true? Are their adcoms somehow connected where they can see people who applied to both programs? (and if so is that a big red flag for them)

Nope there is no issue. Applied to both, interviewed at both, unfortunately didn't get into either

Two different schools

Completely two different schools with two different missions. DO loves hollistic applicants, MD is big mission about the city of Camden. (Not mutually exclusive)
