Rowan University's Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine has received its Letter of Reasonable Assurance and is now accepting applications at their portal:

Applications close December 31. Good luck everyone!

does anyone have their doubts/worries about going to an unaccredited vet school? what does the process look like after graduating?

I was considering applying. From my understanding, as long as you graduate while they have provisional accreditation, you will be able to practice as a veterinarian.

I think the biggest worry about attending unaccredited programs is the fact that you have no idea how quality the education is. In theory, it “doesn’t matter” and you will still graduate with a dvm but alternatively will the program prepare you to pass the NAVLE? The answer is really who knows. That would be my biggest concern is whether or not I could pass the NAVLE upon graduation. That plus the fact that ur paying equivalent tuition to known schools that have established programs and NAVLE pass rates. It’s a toss up tbh I see pros and cons

yeah, im an ISS so the cheaper tuition is huge to me since I have undergrad loans as well but I heard that if you graduate from an unaccredited school you have to take a series of exams BEFORE you are even allowed to take the NAVLE

The extra exams are if you went to a program that if not even on track for accreditation (for example, European schools outside of the handful that are on VMCAS). With schools that are provisionally accredited it would just be passing the NAVLE.

Cowsrcool has a point, though, as to how well a brand new school will prepare its students to pass the NAVLE. I am a good test-taker and feel like if, for the sake of argument, only 70% of Rowan students pass the NAVLE then I'd be in that 70%. I also want to be a capable and highly-skilled clinician, however, so I'll be applying and paying attention to the faculty that they hire if I have multiple acceptances.

If I was in state I’d 100% be applying for that reason alone. Unfortunately the cheaper tuition is just a real deal breaker (for me) and makes the other questionable things worth it.

definitely not trying to discourage people from applying! Just some things people should definitely consider. I think seeing who will be faculty is really important plus checking out their clinical year models

Same here. The IS tuition is a huge reason why I’m applying and willing to take the risk.

Will we only need to submit transcripts, LORs, and the application fee? That’s all I’m seeing on their website, but I find it hard to believe that there won’t also be some kind of essay or personal statement required along with it.

you have to start the application first but I believe there are some essay questions. The thing that sucks is you have to do the application in the order that they put it in, it isn't like VMCAS where you can skip ahead and view the essay questions before you finish the previous steps of the application. I started it yesterday but I have no idea what the questions are because I haven't gotten that far in the application.

I filled out enough of the app to get to the essay page. There are two essays. 1st essay is same as VMCAS: "Why do you want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?" 3000 characters

2nd essay is "The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine seeks students who align with our mission, vision, and values. Provide examples of how your experiences and achievements reflect our core values." Also 3000 characters.

And I’m assuming that we can’t pull our letters of recommendation that were submitted through VMCA. Meaning we have to ask people again to do a letter for recommendations in a different system

The instructions I found on the website say that we will provide the contact info for our recommenders and then the school will reach out to them for the letters, so basically like it was for VMCAS they just have to do it a second time, which I’ll feel like a pest asking them to do, but I will in fact ask them. It definitely would be nicer if VMCAS could just provide our applications to them. Hopefully all of mine still have the letters handy 😅

Exactly. I don’t want to be pest 🤣

Is anyone else getting mildly annoyed with this application? I don't have an email address for every experience I have and it won't save without one 👎

Seriously! I haven’t started, but that’s gonna be a problem. I worked in a vet freshman year that is now closed. Maybe use your own email for those? I’m just not looking forward to asking all the people that I had do recs for the main VMCA do everything all over again.

New information from tonight's Zoom info session:
  • They are working on a portal so that applicants will be able to make sure that all their transcripts and LORs have been received.
  • Interviews to be conducted February-ish (MMI, virtual)
  • Offers in March
  • All courses in the curriculum will be graded pass (70%+)/fail.
I believe everything else was on the website.

Oh wow, I haven't gotten to the experiences portion of the application yet. Did anyone who attended the zoom info session ask about how we should proceed with this?

I just sent them all an email explaining about Rowan's new school opening and they were all more than happy to send the same letter to SSVM! I truly would not anticipate any of them to be annoyed, from what my boss (my DVM recommendation) said it was very straight forward and he did not have any issues with sending the LOR over.

Im trying to assign my pre-reqs and am a little confused. For the upper level biology courses I'm trying to see if my animal diseases, microbio, or physiology count. At my school they are all above a 200 level course but the website says to use their course catalog to see if it matches what they want and their preferred level. However, any course I click on from my school it says that it is considered an elective.....any help would be appreciated.

Also does anyone know if admissions are rolling to static?

I would email them with the course descriptions and syllabi if you have them. They have been very helpful with that kind of thing for me.

anyone else taken a look at faculty? looks pretty good so far, I also see they are hiring all specialists as well. its looks pretty good so far in terms of that and the fact they are hoping to have the hospital fully running by clinical years. I just wonder when we can have clinical experience with the hospital still getting started

Yeah i honestly think it’s going to be amazing

Anyone else a current Rowan student? I’m in their MPH program currently hoping to transition to their vet school if I get accepted

Does anyone know if they send a confirmation message out when all materials (including transcripts, letters, etc.) are received after submission?

I'm applying to SSVM and trying to figure out who my third reference will be. So far I have 1 confirmed from an ER DVM and 1 waiting on confirmation from another ER DVM (she wrote a reference for me this cycle already so I'm not worried). In my mind, these are the options I have for that third slot:
A: PhD level prof who wrote for me this VMCAS cycle, but I haven't taken a class with in 3 years
B: Current community college level prof (biology)
C: ER RVT - Training coordinator - has said a lot of positive things about how well I've taken to the field, have worked with for 13 months
D: GP DVM who gave me a lot of positive feedback at my 90 day review but I've only worked with for 5 months

Any feedback welcome!

In my humble opinion:
A/B: You already have two DVMs, so an academic reference is an opportunity to provide admissions with information about you in the classroom as opposed to in a work environment. Even though our end goal is to be successful in a clinical setting, we still have classroom time that we’ll need to do well in to get to that goal, so a professor’s perspective is a great way to show that you’re capable of that . . . but only if the professor can actually explain why you’re capable of that. I ran into the same issue with my own recommendations, since I’ve only taken a few classes this past year; all of my professors either haven’t seen me in years or only saw me for one semester.
What was your communication like with Professor A when they wrote you a letter for VMCAS? Did they seem to remember you well and seem eager to write you a letter, or did you have to remind them who you were? How long have you known Professor B and how much one-on-one interaction have you had with them while taking their class(es)? Do you feel that you’ve had the chance to demonstrate to them that you’re a dedicated student and that their class matters to you?
If either one of these two professors seems to know you well and see you in a positive light at this time, I think that would be a good option for your third slot.
C: While different from an academic reference, a vet tech also has a useful perspective. They know what makes a good veterinarian and thus can point out qualities you have that line up with that. Since you’ve already gotten positive feedback from this person and have worked together for over a year now, I don’t see how you could go wrong with this one.
D: It’s great that you were able to make a good impression in a relatively short time, but I don’t see how this one will add anything useful to what the first two DVMs (who have presumably known you longer) can say about you. I think this is a good backup in the unlikely event your second vet says no. Two DVM letters are a great thing, but I’m not sure that three would be necessary, especially since it sounds like C and possibly either A or B are already good options and would provide a picture of you from more than just a vet’s perspective.
I hope this helps!

Thank you, this is in line with what I was thinking and is super helpful!!

It looks like the upcoming class size will be 70 students with class sizes eventually increasing to 90 students. Does anyone know the breakdown of IS vs OOS spots?

"The final candidates will be selected from two pools; in-state and out-of-state. We anticipate approximately half of the student body will be New Jersey residents and half will be from out of the state" Admissions Information

For those who have already submitted everything, when submitting your transcripts through National clearinghouse, did you just choose Rowan university admissions? I don’t see an option specifically for the school of veterinary medicine

I haven’t submitted yet, but I would reach out to admissions to clarify where they need it sent, if you haven’t already. I can’t imagine they would need you to submit a whole separate transcript order if Rowan university admissions isn’t where it needs to go, but universities are wacky sometimes and maybe they wouldn’t be able to access it in that case, for whatever reason. I’m planning to have my application ready to submit by tomorrow, so I’ll see if either Clearinghouse or Parchment has a vet school option by then!

I chose the option where you have to provide an email and used the email they offered for transcript submissions. I submitted mine about a week ago and my portal was updated that they got them sometime last week.

Where in the portal can you see that the transcripts were received? I'm not finding it, although I haven't submitted the application yet. Did you already submit and maybe that's the difference?

I did it through the National Clearinghouse. I just typed in Rowan University (doesn’t say school of veterinary). I checked my status and it was accepted takes like 24-48hrs for it to be updated on the portal.

You have to submit first. Then using the same link you got to access your application you can review your application and see the status of transcripts, LORs, and application payment.

did anyone else have issues with your LOR request not sending? I thought it would send after you save the page even before you finish the application

My requests were sent immediately as I saved the page / info. All three confirmed confirmation. If they are not seeing it in their emails I’d have them check their spam. One of mine had it go in their spam mailbox.

they all checked their spam as well and nothing.....

I would double check emails were entered correctly or give it at least 24hrs. For me, everyone got the email instantly. But Rowan does say give 24-48hrs for any updates to applications. If you’re worried though, definitely reach out to admissions. Kate has been very helpful!

Yes!! 2 of mine did send but 1 did not I had to email them!

Are those of you with submitted applications able to see confirmation when Rowan receives LORs, transcript, and fee, and if so, would you mind sharing where exactly you’re seeing that? I can see everything that I put on my application, but can’t see confirmation about those three things.

There is a brown "View Details" button in the top right. When you click on it a pop-up appears with a checklist: fee paid, each LOR, and each transcript.

Thanks! That’s what I thought, but I don’t have the view details button. I’ll try it on my laptop later and maybe that will have it.

I just submitted my application and paid my fee, but when I check my detailed status, the checkmark isn't there for the fee. Does it take a few days to process or something? I just want to make sure I didn't do anything wrong while submitting the payment

Yeah they say things take like 24-48hrs to be updated. As long as you got a confirmation email of your receipt you have proof, if it’s not updated in 48hrs I’d reach out to be on the safe side! Especially with the deadline coming up!
