Hey everyone,
I'm thinking about living on campus. They sent me a housing assigment and it's $856 for a one bedroom 👎 . For those of you who know, are utilities includied and if not what are they? Also, is parking inlcuded in the rent? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Yeah, I guess utilities are not included. The parking is still a bit ambiguous 🙄

Hey, are these apartments housing specifically for medical students?

These are apartments for Rush students. I'm assuming it includes the other Rush colleges as well (nursing, graduate, and so on). I'm pretty sure they're not exclusively for med. students.

$856 for a one bedrooom around this area is a huge rip off.... Check around before you sign the contract/lease.

Have you checked public housing? I went to high school in this area (Roosevelt and Race), and there are plenty of places for affordable housing. I would have recommended the Robert Taylor homes, but they have been recently demolished. Cabrini Green is also affordable, but you will need some transportation. I would recommend walking and taking the EL. However, parking is surprisingly plentiful, but there is a slight security risk.

If I go to Rush or UIC, I wouldn't know what I would do for housing. I'd probably move into the dorms or something. The whole area is overpriced and crowded. You might as well live on-campus and avoid transportation costs rather than living farther away for the same price.

HOWEVER! There has been very recent development of "University Village", an extremely nice area of shops, apartments, and condos along Halsted Street south of Roosevelt Road. I would HIGHLY recommend looking into this. The area is beautiful and has a great view of the downtown area. I don't know about pricing, but I'm sure it's not outrageous. It's close to Metra and CTA buses.

I'm headed to Rush as well. I was also assigned a 1-bedroom, but the $865/month is a little pricey. You need to figure in at least $100 in utilities, cable, internet, phone etc. And thats for living next to the hospital in not such a great area. For that price, you can get a place in the city. It seems that most of the second years move into the city anyways, so why not just start there? Many of the highrises downtown will be expensive, around 1200 for a one bedroom, and then $200 for parking, but you can either look for a convertible/studio so that it would be a little cheaper. Also, renting in a condo building (from an owner of a condo instead of a apartment company) might be cheaper, as an individual owner might be flexible with price.

Thanks guys. The security deposit is 856 too, and they need that by june 6. I think I'm just gonna have to look for something else. I really can't spare that kind of cash now. I just hope that I won't end up getting screwed 🙁
