Russian/Ukrainian/Soviet Predents/Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think that the fact that I'm from Russia , worked to my advantage.
after all, schools ARE looking for divercity.
Good luck everyone~

я из Беларуси. В штатах с 2003. В этом году подаю документы. Интересно вопрос национальности поднимался у кого-либо на интерью и вообще быть из бывшего СССР - это плюс или минус для школ? Спасибо.

I was born in Ukraine came to CA '96 But i really don't like to associate myself with the word "soviet". We all, well mostly our parents "ran away" from that country and brought us to a nice safe place here. I'm a big US patriot, but I'm also proud of my heritage, traditions and roots, however the country that I was born in, is unfortunately nothing to be proud of.

Privet vsem,

Anyone got into Westen? I did, and I was wondering if anyone else is planning on going there. I am also Armenian, born in Russia, lived in Baku, and in Armenia. Inthe States since '92.

Udachi vsem!

The word "soviet" in the title is not to offend anyone. It is simply to refer to the people from the former USSR (16 republics) that speak russian.
Good to meet u!
good luck!!

Guslik, pozdravlyayu, ti ne postupil/a v proshlom godu ? Ya noven'kiy zdes' Illinois, 2004, poydu uchit'sya v UIC vozmozhno v sleduyushem godu. Waiting ame just ended for me this Dec.1st. Vsem udachi i keep in touch.

Navernoye ya vibiru UIC, 15 minut ot menya, nikuda ne nado pereezzhat', i samaya deshevaya optsiya dlya menya (men'she rasplachivat'sya za loan 😉) compared to Indiana. And it's not a bad dental school too.

Privet everyone.
I was born in Belarus also. My parents and I came to this country when I was about 4. It is nice to see such a large Russian population on SDN. Good luck to everyone, I hope we all get into the school we want.

EDIT:
Oh, i forgot to answer your question. I think its a plus. When the committees look at thousands of applications that are 99% identical, yours will stand out. It makes you seem more cultured and worldly. Russian people are known for their intellect and work ethic. The only down side I can think of is if your english is poor, that might be a negative. Being able to understand lecture material and communicate with your patient is important.

Privet everyone!

I was born near Moscow, and moved to the states in 1991. I'm Jewish (in response to a previous post), and I'm pretty sure a lot of Jews emmigrated around that time.

I'm hopefully going to OSU, but got into Case Western and UPitt as well. None of those schools have a large Russian or Russian/Jewish population :-( although the cities of Pittsburgh and Cleveland do...

Good luck to all!!!
