This will probably benefit both Rutgers and UMDNJ for the most part. As far as any changes in the general chances for a pre-med student applying to umdnj... not too sure. UMDNJ tends to take a lot of Rutgers students as it is though
Yes I am graduating from RU this may and when I interviewed at both UMD schools, this was brought up a lot. You rutgers undergrads will benefit from extra research money coming in for the medical schools. According to the deans who spoke to us, this will provide you with better research opportunities.
It should be the other way around, Rutgers was far more fiscally sound than the UMDNJ system. Rutgers also had/has far more funding. In regards to OP though, shouldn't changed much, there is a very strong RU presence at NJMS, RWJMS and SOM
The Rutgers name has a lot more national recognition than UMDNJ, so I think thats a definite benefit. It sounds silly but the merger plus the movement or the Rutgers athletic department into the Big Ten division will do a ton for national recognition. There will probably be more research money floating around, but I dont think the research opportunities themselves will change that much. It was stated somewhere that the merger will potentially put Rutgers (undergrad) into the top 30 research schools category. Dont know if thats true but the merger can only do good things in my opinion.
But to answer your question, I dont think it will affect pre-meds at all. UMDNJ already got a ton of students from Rutgers. The merger wont change anything in that regard.
The merger will be beneficial to rutgers students. Also, I believe that either NJMS or RWJMS (I think RWJMS) will be renamed to Rutgers Medical School. That could also lead to more national recognition.
Actually both will inherit the Rutgers name (i.e. NJMS of Rutgers University and RWJMS of Rutgers University). I can pretty much guarantee you they won't be taking Robert Wood Johnson's name off that medical school considering all of the money J&J has given.
