RVU-COM (Rocky Vista - Colorado) Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! I think happy hour is a FANTASTIC idea! I also talked to Kerri with the school about setting up a time for the people who have already been accepted to go and tour the place. I guess construction is coming along quickly, and she said that we could definitely do it on a Friday afternoon! I thought that this way we could see the school before orientation week. Make us even more excited to go  What do you think?

I interviewed at RVU yesterday and had an awesome experience. Everyone was friendly and personally made me feel like home. The interview was very laid-back and conversational. Even better, Julie the admissions director said she'd let us know this Friday if we were accepted! The staff is dedicated and enthusiastic. I'm confident I did well in the interview and hopefully I'll be attending RVU next year... how exciting!!

Good one... hopefully the medic experience will help both in the application process and in school.

Good luck on your interview Friday!

Well I had my interview today. I am more excited now then I have been so far. Everyone was great, as you all have already pointed out.👍
The ADCOM is meeting right now to decide my fate! Julie will be calling later today to let me know. 😱
We were surprised with a tour of the new campus at the end of the day!!! In a nutshell, WOW. It is really amazing. 150,000 square feet, 3 stories and will be just beautiful when it is all said and done.
Overall, I totally fell in love with the school.😍I hope that I get good news later. I will let you all know!!!!

Well kids, I hope you are all ready to get this party started. I got the call from the majors leagues and I am in!!!!!
Time to pop the cork on the champagne. GG, you owe me a shot!😀

I'm in also!!! Such a wonderful phone call to recieve this afternoon. Couldn't ask for a better Christmas gift. Congrats Lizard and welcome aboard.

As stated above you are all killing me😱. I have to still wait for one more LOR before I am complete and send in my app. I am very jealous of all who have gotten accepted and my secondary is finally ready to go out but you are all hogging the spots!!! No really congratulations to all who have made it so far and hopefully my package will be complete soon...and I get an interview....and I get accepted. I want to go here so bad I can taste it😛. You guys better not have filled the medic quota by the way cause here is one more that wants on the bus.

Which letter are you waiting for? :scared: Harass them and let them know you need it now. Have them send it next day mail if you can. At least RVU is closed for the holiday.👍
Hang in there. PM me if you have any questions.

Don't worry about it! Yeah, it went great. Everyone was just the best. We even got to get a sneak peek at the inside of the awesome, new, high tech building we get to study in for the next few years.
Thanks again! I am so excited to switch my mind frame and start thinking about August. I'm on cloud nine, with every single emotion surging though my body.

I was wondering why RVU will take two years to become eligible for federal aid and that new school in Washington says they can become eligible within 3 to 4 months?

That's the time frame for the creation of the allied health college at RVU-COM in 2009-2010 (i.e. PA, nursing in ~2 years). It's a requirement evaluated by the U.S. Dept of Education prior to the approval to move forward with Title IV-V funding. Otherwise without another college, the RVU College of Osteopathic Medicine must graduate it's first class of medical students before being granted full accreditation. The conversion to "full" typically happens just prior to the graduation of the inaugural class if there's no other allied health college training students at that time, with the current approval that has been received from the Colorado Higher Education and the AOA.

I'm not certain about PNWU but I think it was answered in the PNWU Discussion thread.

Hey everyone, I just have been reading this thread. I am headed to Colorado next weekend for my interview at RVU-COM and am so excited. I am from the East Coast but I love Colorado, and everyone's comments have been extremely insightful. I can't wait for my interview😳

Hey good luck oneredtree.:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Just remember to relax and be yourself. Make sure to check out the interview feedback on SDN. Also, you can feel free to PM me with any additional questions that you may have!👍

Where on the East Coast are you from? Are you staying in CO overnight? Do you get to make a trip up to the mountains for some fresh powder?

Thanks for the advice. Its greatly appreciated. If I have any questions, I will definitely ask.

I am actually from the NY/ NJ area but I lived in New Orleans, Chicago, and Washington DC and overseas. My good friends live out in Aurora, CO and we are going cross country skiing a few days before my interview. I really liked Colorado when I visited in August.

Congratulations! As paramedliz mentioned, don't hesitate to inquire should you have any additional questions. Best of luck.

I, for one, like the CU educational modeling (COMLEX and USMLE prep infused with the integrative, biomedical educational model being adopted by RVU). I also believe the the clinicals there in Denver (70%), CO Springs, Grand Junction, and Pueblo will be excellent based on my research as well as what's being said in the medical community there. These two aspects (educational model and clinicals) are the most important to me for my medical education and the RVU/CU model would undoubtedly allow me to excel in order to match into my chosen specialty.

Even though RVU-COM is using a proven and intregrative educational model based on CUs, it's apparent that the student counts more than the model across the board. However, based on my research, RVU-COM matriculants can at least rest easy knowing that the right opportunities in CO and the Mountain West will be there in order to promote success as a physician. There isn't a doubt in my mind that RVU-COM will demonstrate that their students are extremely well-prepared (board scores and match) and I think the integrative biomedical educational model (based on CUs success) as well as the clinical sites will only serve to significantly bolster student achievement past the first two years of didactic training - basic training in years 1-2 that any student can really get anywhere.

to PARAMEDICLIZARD!
Woowee!!
I'd love to be in your shoes!
You must have socked it to them in the interview.

Yeah...It has been pretty awesome news. 😀
My shoes right now are running around work at the hospital for the 4th day in a row. I'm not too sure you would want to be in them right now.
Thanks for the love though!!!

Hey Everyone!

Congrats to all that have received interviews and acceptances! I think that for all the in state folks, we should get together and meet. Let's plan a happy hour toward the end of the month???

(any excuse for cocktails, eh?) I owe some people a shot!!! 😉

Thought you forgot for a minute!!! I'm gonna be out of town though until 2-5-08. My lady and I are going on a cruise to the Caribbean. 😎 Not that it's all about me, but can we postpone a little?

Of course I didn't forget!

No problem postponing - I'm off to Belize from January 13th to the 23rd.

Maybe the weekend of February 9th? Any takers?

Nice! I've heard Belize is awesome.

I could do the 9th. I work a ton, but I'm game.😎 Anybody else in?

Hey libo...where do you stand? Did you get your letter in? Just wanted to check up on you.🙂

Thanks for the check up I finally got the last letter today. I am having my wife review my essays and am sending it off later in the day. Man it feels good to actually cross the starting line with a destination in mind. Hopefully (fingers crossed) I will be able to join you all in Feb for the informal meet and greet. I have been avoiding this forum cause it makes me a little more sick each time I have to read about one more spot being taken. After reading my essays again it really screams of my excitement for Rocky Vista.

On a side note anybody from Colo have any leads on some jobs. I got let go just before Christmas and am looking for someplace to work. Thanks for any help!

What line of work are you in?

To be honest, I loved the vibe and energy of the school when I interviewed. However, I had already put down a deposit elsewhere before my RVU acceptance. As much as I think I would feel comfortable and like the environment, I am really struggling with the financial aspects.

The combination of the private loans accruing interest from day one AND being ineligible for loan deferment (I have a mess of undergrad/graduate loans) make it completely unrealistic on paper. As great as it seems, it is difficult to justify the financial consequences, especially with other options.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? How are others dealing with the financial aspects?

Thanks for any input!

Same situation here. According to the financial aid reps, federal loans should be available second year (if not sooner) when the other allied health programs initiate and Title IV is granted. Otherwise it's just Nelnet, MedPlus, or your own money market temporarily. MM (or other security where youre currently comfortable) is where I'd try to sock it away - and sooner rather than later I might add, regardless of where you attend.

The financial counselors over there are working on additional scholarships (on top of what they've already secured) and other means by which to cover costs. The financial challenge won't be there long and they are working on alternatives in the interim. I also sent you a PM.

Well, I sent one of you a PM regarding this same topic - don't recall if it was OneLessCar or OneRedTree.
I've got to sign off now.

Good for you! I hope you recieve an interview sooner rather than later! Hang in there. Everything will work out the way it should.🙂

You could come have my job, but I don't leave until July. Guess that doesn't help any. 👎

hey guys, about how long after your primary was mailed by aacomas until you received secondary/interview invite? I just last week added RVU so it was only mailed last week, do I stand a shot?

thanks

do you guys think its too late to apply to rocky vista? just gotta have my amcomas info sent and then have to do the secondary...do everything. hahha

You still have a good chance... last I've heard there are somewhere around 50 seats available. They are very quick to get back to you after you send in your secondary - They got back to me in 4 or 5 days with my interview 3 weeks later. My interview was on Tuesday and they called me to tell me I was accepted on Friday. They are very timely and everyone there is extremely nice.

I want to say that I received my secondary within a few days of RVU receiving my primary app.

I turned it around in two weeks, but ran into difficulty with one of my LOR's. Once I was complete I received my invitation to interview in one or two days.

From there, I was fourtunate to be able to schedule an interview within 10 days.

Hope that helps!

Like medic2doc says, you probably have a good chance. You don't know if you don't try.

You may want to consider emailing the director of admissions to get a better handle on where we stand with how full our class is.

If it was me, I would go for it!👍

does RVU screen for secondaries, and if so are there specific minimum requirements? and do you know what the secondary questions are or have a link to it?

thanks!

I'd suggest sending an e-mail to Ms. Rosenthal, the Director of Admissions:
[email protected]

Also, there are a couple/few essays on the secondary but it's all straight forward...

ok thanks guys, just sent her an email.

about how long though until you heard back from RVU after your primary was sent off?

A week or two...they turn around documents very quickly.

Let me see where to start well I was working as a manny (that is a male nanny) but before I was an EMT-B cert expires soon and not sure I want to go through the hassle of keeping it current. I am looking at lab rat/ assistant job types maybe something in clinical or industrial work.

Now on to the excitement! I sent in my secondary yesterday morning...this afternoon they called me for an interview!!!!🙂 I can't wait it is next tuesday so send some good juju my way. With some luck I can make it to the get to know each other pow-wow. I really hope I get in not just because it is my first choice but I am not sure I can afford to go to any other interviews😛. Take care everybody!!

Way to go libo....😀 I'm super excited for you. Just remember to be yourself and I'm sure that you will be great!!!

Since I don't have any kids, I can't offer you any manny work. Sorry.👎

Good luck again and feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions!!!:luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:
