Sackler 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
some quick answers.

you will be notified via snailmail.

you will find out by the end of march, beginning of april, as stated earlier. So if it is march 21, as it is now, we still have not reached the end of march. Their answers will not change.

finally, not being jewish doesnt decrease your chances of acceptance. But there are a higher number of jewish applicants than nonjewish. Don't worry.

relax. kick back, go out for a drink or two. read a book. watch some house episodes. or scrubs. or american idol. You'll find out soon.

my acceptance letter showed up today. it came in a normal sized envelope and it was dated 3.18 on the letter.

good luck to everyone

me 2! you planning on attending? There is a very good chance I will be attending, still waiting to hear from a few other places...

Just got my acceptance letter today too. I'm not 100% sure I'm attending, but definitely sending in my deposit.

Any further news from anyone? Acceptances/Rejections/Wait list. Dying to know here!

I'm definitely gonna go to sackler. It's for sure my first choice school. However I am thinking about defering for a year and keep working this job I'm really enjoying and live freely for another year.

Does anyone know anyone that got accepted and defered for a year? How did they propose it to the school?

Any advice would be seriously appreciated

I was just about to ask the same thing. At my job, if I spent another year here, I could probably get my name (second author) on at least 2 more papers, if not more. If I were deferring, I'd like to be able to let them know as soon as possible so they could let more people in this year. Does anyone know about deferring at Sackler?

For all of you who have received an acceptance... where do you guys live?

from the sad perspective of someone who's still heard nothing...does anyone know if there's a second round of acceptance letters? Or if the waitlist letters have gone out?

In speaking with the admissions department today, I was told the following:

The admissions committee is still meeting, to be patient, and admissions statuses will be mailed soon. It wasn't entirely clear, but I would assume the letters are rolling out as they become ready, not an all at once thing.. which is a good thing. I am just going off what I was told though.

Anyone else receive news or updates?

i am studying in israel (MPH)...

Has anyone heard of any admissions/waitlistings/rejections since the first set of letters went out? Have any rejection letters been sent?
(And congrats to all the accepted!)

I just got my acceptance letter in the mail today! So exciting!!! I live on Long Island by the way for those trying to get a grasp on mail times.

Anyway, I can confirm it comes in a plain letter sized envelope. They make you sweat it out until you start reading the letter. No obvious over-sized welcome packet.

The letter is straight forward and asks for a $100 non-refundable deposit within two weeks to hold your place.

Good luck everyone!

before you all jump the gun and massive confusion ensues... you will receive information shortly about the official Sackler Class of 2013 google group, and other orientation information if you have been accepted. meanwhile, i suggest the facebook group as a decent way to get acquainted.

Congratulations to those accepted. And hopefully, welcome to Sackler/Israel. You will have a blast.

Does anyone have any info regarding residency matches? I'm sure it's at least a little harder to get into competitive residencies like derm and neurosurgery.

how long does it take for the dr. that will be conducting the interview to contact you? i was notified of my interview a few days ago but still no word from the dr. i'm getting antsy b/c im just soo excited!!

p.s. anyone know what the estimated interview/acceptance ratio is?

Prepb18,
Congrats on the interview - when did you submit your app? I'm still waiting and hoping for an interview invite. Good luck.

prepb18, won't the admissions office contact you with the time and place of your interview? If you're concerned, you can always call them.

And does anyone know if acceptance letters are still going out for people who interviewed as early as February?

thanks so much! i am beyond thrilled about the interview and just hope i don't blow it! to be honest, i was completely BLINDSIDED by the interview invite b/c my application has been complete for so long (since august). a friend of mine had his app complete around the same time and was just invited for an interview as well. not sure how/when sackler picks its interviewees (weekly, monthly, pull them randomly out of a hat, etc.), but all i know is that there is still hope for you!! good luck!

i assumed so as well, but here is the exact email:

"We would like to invite you for an interview in xx. Dr. xx's office will contact you to invite you for an interview. Please confirm this e-mail and your interest."

i figured i would wait another day or so and THEN call sackler to ask. i just don't want to come across as obnoxious and over-paranoid!

Anyone else out there who interviewed late Feb. who still hasn’t heard back?

Don't worry too much about the interview, it will be the most laid back med school interview you can have =)

Got my acceptance letter today! I am so happy I think I might go streaking...

It was dated March 30th and I live in NJ if that helps anyone still waiting.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL - SEE YOU IN THE HOLY LAND

I interviewed for Sackler a few days ago. It was a good interview. I wouldn't say it was a breeze though. The interview lasted an hour and was quite substantial. I have a 34 MCAT, pretty good grades and lots of EC's. Hope I get in! :xf:

I have been accepted to US programs too, but I want to be a pediatrician and Sackler tuition is about $15k less per year than my US schools (money matters when you want to go into peds and matching is less of a concern), and I would love to live in Israel for awhile.

I think in the 2008 match one guy got into neurosurgery at Brown University. I wonder what his stats were and if he had a story. With a class so small, having one guy matching into NS is pretty impressive.

Yeah that's quite amazing. I'm actually looking in that direction so it's encouraging at least.

neurosurgery at brown, yes. it is entirely possible. As far as i know, one guy in the class of 2009 thought about neurosurgery, but opted for internal medicine.

he matched at yale.

both were outstanding students, and outstanding people. I never met the neurosurgery match, but it seems like he is a "sackler legend." Nothing is impossible coming from this school, and as with any other place, networking and hard work is important to opens doors.

Theboat, have you tried calling the NY office?

I called today, they said that I should hear in the next few weeks. If there are any other people on this thread who interviewed mid/late February who also haven't heard back, I guessing the same would apply to you.

Does anyone know what the academic schedule is like at Sackler? Does it follow most US schools? Do we get the summer after our first year off? And do we get a winter break to visit family?

you get time off on holidays. about 5 weeks or so in the summer, depending on how the holidays fall.

this year most of october was a holiday break, roughly 21 days, maybe a few extra. Included high holidays and sukkot.

there is another week or two off in the winter, passover, and then you get a few summer weeks.

Great news. Thanks. Do you know of people who fly back to the States during the breaks?

definitely. in fact, I will be back in the states tomorrow night until the 17th during our "pesah" break. Some people go home to visit friends/family/eat american food...maybe see opening day of baseball season (woohoo!). Otherwise, some people choose to travel around europe, a few people are going to do some volunteer work in ethiopia, and some are just sticking around Israel, studying, relaxing, enjoying being able to sleep in and catch up on life.

Wow, this waiting is soooo hard! If they're going to reject me, I wish they'd just do it already. And thanks for sharing your info. I called once, a couple of weeks ago, and I'm kinda scared to call again.

Hey - my interview was way back on the 13th of Feb I think. It lasted about
30 minutes. The acceptance letter was dated March 30th. Hope that helps.

Quick question: I am both an Israeli and American citizen, I was born in Israel and moved to the US when I was 11. My current status is "ben mehagrim" (son of immigrants). I can only go to Israel for 4 months every year without being drafted into the army. Is there anyone in my same situation, dual citizenship. Who do we talk to and what do we do? I spoke with Mrs. Warner at the New York Office and she seemed to think I dont need to do anything (She never heard of this 4 month thing), which I find very strange. Anyone?

I think you'll be exempt if you go there for the purposes of going to school.

Yeah Guinea is right. The army won't draft you if you have the exemption because you are in school. It wouldn't hurt to check the consulate though. I am a dual citizen also but did the army so I don't have any problems but I used to be in the same situation. I got a special exemption from the consulate at the time.

A) It is israel. THey can draft you if they want.

B) you have to deal with the Israel office at Sackler, they can give you better information.

C) the 4 month "leave or get drafted" is the tourist visa. IF you stay past 4 months...trouble ensues. You have to leave the country three times a year and come back under this type of visa.

D) The school will give you an international student visa, which means you must leave israel once a year, i believe, and return...renew the visa the next year. We have people in our program who are sons of Israelis/immigrants, and they have not been forced into military service. The office will vouch for you should you come to israel, but call in advance so they understand the situation...

i believe all of this information is correct, but i will double check it all.

Being an old CC Sabathia fan (only from last summer)...what happened last night? he really blew it for the yanks

Does anyone know around how many applications Sackler receives and how many people they like to interview?

Hello all -

I am currently a post-bacc student. I will be graduating from the program in May and was wondering if it is too late to still apply to Sackler for this cycle at that point. I plan to take the MCAT this month. The reason I ask is because it would be great to skip the lag year. Anybody follow the same path? Any insight would be much appreciated -

Thanks!

Their website says they accept applications until June 15, so you should be ok. Good luck!
