We are doing sacral motion in lab and I am having a hard time visualizing how the sacrum is moving in relation to the innominates and the lumbar spine during walking. Does anyone know of a publication that contains an animation or depiction of this motion? I tried to google it and search on pubmed but I cant seem to find anything visual. Thanks!

Go to the library and get the green OMT book by Savarese from the circulation desk.

I don't know if this helps, but just remember what ever leg is the weight bearing leg is what axis the sacrum is on (right leg bearing weight = right axis).

The easiest way for me to understand it and the way I explain it to the first and second years is .....

If you are in left stance (right foot on heel strike, left foot on toe off) you have a Left on Left Torsion (Sacrum is rotated left on the Left Oblique Axis so Sidebent Right). Since the lumbar spine and the sacrum are ALWAYS opposites, the lumbar spine would be sidebent left, rotated right.

If you are in right stance you have a Right on Right Torsion (Sacrum rotated Right on the Right Oblique Axis so Sidebent Left). The lumbar would then have to be sidebent right rotated left.

The main thing to remember is the sacrum and lumbar spine are ALWAYS complete opposites. If you can understand one of them you will be able to figure out the other.

Hope that helps!
