Today a kid in my class offered to sell me drugs🙁....Then he complained about how he got a D on his orgo exam🙁....then he told me he didn't do that days HW🙁.... then he told me he had no doubt that he would be accepted into medical school and become a rich surgeon:scared:😱.

I was stunned. He was completely serious. I kinda felt bad for him; he was just so confident that he would succeed. Just thought I'd share....

what makes you think he can't be a rich surgeon?

plenty of people turn their lives around. odds are against him obviously, but i've never seen odds get the best of someone who was determined enough.

edit: stay away from drugs, drugs are bad. D.A.R.E

not as bad as my roommate..

last semester he ended dropping two courses so he finished the semester having completed two courses, intro bio and calc. C- in calc B in bio. took cell bio this semester, pre-req-wise. is in zero clubs on campus/no volunteering/clinical experience/research. today he told me his courseload for next year. just genetics courses. when i asked when he planned on taking chem, let alone orgo, let alone physics, he replies: ah i was talked out of taking it [chem 1] next semester. i go: by who? he goes: the pre-med advisor ............. *face-palm* :bang:

Why don't you guys help them out? I hear alot of he/she said this and is soo stupid why don't you correct? anybody i meet who is pre-med i ask them their plan and offer them whatever information I have, i would want somebody to do that for me if i was the one sounding like an idiot.

This is not some innocent lost lamb we're talking about. This kid is a "grade A" jerk. How can anyone really empathize with this kind of person. They are usually cocky, arrogant, and condescending frat boys. Also, would you really want someone who was illegally selling prescription drugs to be your doctor? I think not.

He's not a doctor, he's a college kid.

I'm sure if you went into *every good physician's past* you'd find something unsavory and/or ridiculous as that in their days as a college student. Don't be so judgmental.

^ I see this ALL the time in my school. Everyone in my orgo class failed miserably, and there all still in ochem II right now with me getting the same grades thinking that they are all going to medical school. Seriously, you can't emphasize with them. The sad thing is too, they think they are going to a top tier school, with oh, a D in organic one and im pretty sure a pending F in ochem II. I would help them out, but as someone already mentioned, they are super arrogant, cocky, and think they already have their tickets stamped. In physics class, they harassed my teacher into providing a formula sheet for the first test on kinematics; thats like 3 equations!!!!!😱 my professor did not obliged, and the whole class pretty much failed.

Thats something else.. I'm talking about kids who really don't know any better, i try to help them out.
Hhahaha thats hilarious with the physics exam! We get no cheat sheets in my physics class, my Professor said the department allows us a cheat sheet for the final because they think were stupid

The real issue is why you'd spend more than 5 seconds thinking about such a turkey. If you get all miffed and butthurt over something that is oh so not your problem, how are you going to handle medical school and the real world beyond? Maybe you ought to reconsider whether you are mature enough or otherwise well suited for this career at this point in your life.

Do you wander this forum looking for mean, unnecessarily judgmental, and generally deuschy things to say. From what I have read it would appear so. My judgment, in this case, is entirely justified. The kid illegally sells drugs, uses drugs, and fails his classes. He is in control of his actions and based upon these actions the above inferences are entirely warranted 🙂

Yeah, if he turns his life around I'll give him a high five, but I'm not going treat him for the person he might be as opposed to the person he is.

"Judge not lest ye be judged."

As future physicians--working with/for people with behavioral/emotional/social/physical developmental issues--try to have this type of behaviour arouse sympathy in you, not disgust.

Preachy Preacher,
Conrad

ps...seriously, the world is full of jerks, it's a lot nicer feeling sorry for them, than being angry and disgusted with them.

edit: reading the first post--the OP said "sadly" and "i kind of felt bad for him"....so my post was unnecessary, but I looked up the rest of the quote---"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned, forgive, and ye shall be forgiven."----good quote

I know someone who sold drugs and got into med school. I also know someone who made a D on an exam and got into med school (most classes have a one exam grade replacement policy with the final).

Don't judge him. He could be really smart and ace the rest of the class. I don't know why so I can't say for sure. I'm sure saying, it's not a good idea to judge people like that. He might just be a surgeon one day, I don't know about rich ; ).

Not a "kid". He's a man and should be in jail for selling drugs.

If you went into every good physician's past, or every good person's past, you would certainly find something "unsavory or ridiculous", like telling a racist joke or masturbating in a public bathroom stall. What you would not generally find is drug usage and drug selling. Don't pretend that such socially abhorrent and destructive activities are normal. They are not.

If the "kid" gets his head on straight and turns his life around, more power to him. As of now, though, he's just another sociopath. We should hope most sincerely that he and those like him don't take up valuable space in medical school.

Sociopath?

I'm willing to bet a large portion of physicians have done some form of illegal substance, and almost all have had alcohol.

Yeah... I really don't think we can diagnosis a sociopath (Antisocial PD) over the internet based upon someone's description of their roommate. Heck, in person they can be hard to identify in a psychosocial assessment (although it tends to make itself obvious over time, for sure).

Sociopath?

Correct. I'm not talking narrow clinical definitions, I'm talking about the root meaning of the word. Anyone who habitually acts in a way that tends to destroy society (e.g. selling drugs illegally) is a sociopath.

I'm willing to bet a large portion of physicians have done some form of illegal substance, and almost all have had alcohol.

That you are willing to bet X doesn't mean that X is true, only that you are willing to lose money.

As for alcohol, I certainly agree it's a drug, and in my opinion it should be treated as one, but there is a very large difference between legal drug usage and illegal drug usage. Anyone involved in the latter has no business in medical school. Anyone involved in trafficking in the latter belongs safely in jail.

You need to get out in the real world more bro. I'd rather have my doctor previously sold pot to kids in college than masturbating in public stalls and telling racists jokes all the time, as you said in your previous post. You got some weird and very wrong views of the world.

It's true, though the numbers I have for it are because substance abuse is dramatically rising in medical school!:scared:

Also, the kid's selling pot, it's not like it's crystal meth. It's practically legal in California.

Which means what exactly? In the state of California, everything is legal and causes cancer. (Even speeding is if you can show it wasn't unsafe.)

Doesn't matter. I think his point was the dude's selling pot to college kids. Not crack to kindergartners. And yes, there's a difference.

It means that on the scale of evil pot is waaay, waaay down. We should be more concerned about a history of bullying.

It's not like he's running a cartel, he's just an idiot.

It seems as this thread has gone off into another tangent...

I had a similar experience. The first time I took a regular-level class as opposed to honors or AP in high school was my junior year. I never enjoyed history and I didn't do well on the first test so I decided to switch to the regulars version. Anyways, the levels of the two classes were ridiculously different. The teacher there gave so many opportunities for extra credit that if a student completed all of the work and received 100% on tests and quizzes (achievable), then their overall grade for each quarter could have been 160%! 😱 Still, several students who weren't motivated were getting a C, D, or an F. Often times, there would be group projects and one day I worked up the courage to ask some students what they had planned to do for their future career.

Surprisingly, most their choices required college and some level of a graduate school. One said she wanted to become a doctor, another said theoretical physicist (I had to look up what this one actually does), and the last one said an electrical engineer. A few minutes later, the teacher passed back our previous test and two of them got a D and the last one failed.

Bleg-I think it is people like you that we need less of in Medical Schools. How are you going to relate to your patients, many of whom will be abusers of alcohol, marijuana etc if you already think that these behaviors are "socially abhorrent" as you put it. Dude, get a grip smoking weed is no more harmful than a bunch of other habits people take on and it is only an issue because of its illegal status, which around the country is in the process of being changed. It is decriminalized in many states and the road to legalization is definitely occurring with more and more states allowing usage for medical problems. Telling a racist joke is insensitive, and could emotionally harm someone around you, smoking weed? No one but yourself

you should def find them on facebook and see what they ended up doing. i'm always curious to see if people end up the way i expected them to. most of the time i'm right.

Of course. Drug abusers? No prob! People who understand societal standards and decay and are willing to vocalize their concern? Burn the witches!

How are you going to relate to your patients, many of whom will be abusers of alcohol, marijuana etc if you already think that these behaviors are "socially abhorrent" as you put it.

You mean you think they are not socially abhorrent? You think it's just fine for people to ignore the law, poison themselves and others, and seek to inculcate such attitudes into the rising generation?

I suspect you do not understand societal evolution. Our society is not an impenetrable, indestructible essence.

Dude, get a grip smoking weed is no more harmful than a bunch of other habits people take on and it is only an issue because of its illegal status

Correct. And its illegal status is a big deal.

which around the country is in the process of being changed. It is decriminalized in many states and the road to legalization is definitely occurring with more and more states allowing usage for medical problems.

So therefore, it's not really illegal? Or are you saying that drug usage is not a major health concern and does not in reality destroy families and individuals?

Which of us needs to get a clue?

Telling a racist joke is insensitive, and could emotionally harm someone around you, smoking weed? No one but yourself

That is the most pathetic piece of "reasoning" I have ever heard on this topic. I have talked with many who disagree with me, and some of them manage to give cogent, reasoned arguments to support what they say. You are not one of them.

So therefore, it's not really illegal? Or are you saying that drug usage is not a major health concern and does not in reality destroy families and individuals?

HAHAHA
Get an f-ing clue. It is pot. When has pot ever ruined a family.
We aren't talking about mainlining oxys here.

People love to lump marijuana in with all drugs... nice try.

I feel like this is the crux of your argument. Could you expand on this?

I love how little kids like bleg come online and bash marijuana when it is so painfully obvious that you have no idea what your talking about. It is seriously the same as saying "if you watch violent movies you are gloing to act violently with your patients and hurt and destroy your family" or " if you watch porn than you will molest your patients"

What you saying is probably stupider than that .. get a clue man. Ur gooing to be in theb real world soon. Mommy and daddy aren't going to keep wiping you and making your booboos feel better. Descend those testicles... and I know its hard but ... come up with your own opinion and realize whn you are not able to.

On the other hand, high school is an absolute joke. Although I did end up graduating with a 3.0 exactly, I got my share of C's and D's in high school classes. Heck, I got an F in English for a grading period my Junior year, although it was a college prep class. When I said I wanted to be a doctor, absolutely no one took me seriously. Heck, my parents didn't even really want to let me go to college because they thought I'd be wasting money and drop out after the first semester. I'm not saying everyone that does poorly in high school goes on to succeed, but it can happen.

I slept through high school. Literally. Every class, I'd put my head down and go to sleep. My buddy did the same thing, except he brought a pillow to school. It was the only thing he brought in his backpack.

come up with your own opinion and realize whn you are not able to.

Someone mentioned that the person in the OP was selling Marijuana. I realize now that i failed to mention the drug. This person was dealing ecstacy and LSD, not merely MJ. Perhaps this sheds further enlightenment into my astonishment.
