SAEM vs. EMRA/ACEP

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I joined ACEP/EMRA for Annals of Emergency Medicine and all the free stuff EMRA sends.

I personally found the SAEM web site including their residency catalogue, med student information, and new "virtual advisor" program much more useful than the EMRA stuff, including that med student survival guide that EMRA puts out. Of the two journals, Annals of EM (ACEP) is considered more prestigious than SAEM's Academic Emergency Medicine.

It shouldn't be too crazy to join both. I was broke and I was able to pull it off.

Not all of us could afford joining both groups, like MikeCWRU, go ahead and ask him how he made that money. Can you believe all those RN's and LPN's paid $50 for an hour for a date with him? Sheesh. I mean, literally, it was a minute and a half. Calculate that out and it should be MikeBlingBling.

I would join EMRA (saying this because I joined EMRA and AAEM), because they give you a top 30 problems in EM (great pocket book for EM rotations), and the "Medical Students SUrvivial Guide to applications" or whatever. That helped somewhat during interviews too. The top 30 guide is indispensable, IMHO.

AAEM is a great group too, very cheap to join and they really represent the resident and the relative conservative (IMHO) emergency medicien physician.

I also would sign up for EMRA. It is the organization that ACEP and others try to recruit from so you'll get plenty of goodies.

As a student I signed up for it and also got membership in ACEP and my states (ICEP) organization. I also got regular mailings from SAEM minus the journal. As a student, AAEM is also available, I signed up with them online (and for free) to use their "Rules of the Road" website and get their newsletters.

If I had to choose one I would go with EMRA since you can get the Annals of EM (Though, I actually prefer Academic EM) along with all the other free goodies that Quinn and others were talking about.

Quinn, do you know off hand how much resident membership is in AAEM? I know that my program doesn't pay for it.

I also joined EMRA/ACEP. I liked Annals of EM and all the stuff they give you, too. SAEM's website is very good, but you don't need to join them to use it, Mike! (including the virtual advisor program, which I'm sure is very good, although they deny access to it, if you're not a US med student! -despite membership)

During interviews you will find that PD's either are totally for SAEM OR ACEP. It was funny. 😉

Joining EMRA in my book is a must as a student. In addition to all the stuff you get from EMRA you get ACEP membership and multiple opportunities for leadership development!

AAEM membership is also a great idea. The "Rules of the Road" mentioned is a fabulous resource. I have seen the new version recently, and it looks awesome.

SAEM has a medical student symposium and job fair at the annual meeting, which just passed. If you missed this, do not fret as ACEP has a residency fair in October as well.

Membership in these organizations is nominal when you take into account how much you are spending for Med School!!!

All that said, this forum as well as EMRA's forum will serve as a source of good information for students. 😎

Since we are on the topic of EM organizations

Does anyone know how I can send in a change of address to these organizations. I recently moved out of my apartment and the Post Office has not been forwarding my mail. Go figure huh?

Thanks

Very easy. Just call them up!!! ( 1 800 number, member services)
I must have moved 5 times already since I joined...
🙂

I agree that membership to both is ideal. Getting Annals and AEM sent home for those great rates is an awesome benefit. It will definitely help down the road in reading articles and accessing old articles both on the web and your home supply.

That being said, if you were STRAPPED for cash, I would go with EMRA as it has the most benefits of becoming a member. With SAEM, you can access much of the information without being a member, however EMRA has many things only accessible to members. Check out:

http://www.emra.org/index.cfm?page=138

This includes attendance at the Medical Student Forum and Residency Fair at the national ACEP meeting without a fee compared to the $75 to go to SAEM.

Plus, have you seen the latest and greatest? You can get ERSuite for you Palm/Pocket PC for $35! Regular is like $70 or so.

for $50-55, you will membership to ACEP, state ACEP, and EMRA. combined you will get 3 newsletters a month, minimum, in addition to all the EMRA benefits, ie, 30 top problems, pharm guide, survival guide for med students... these are great resources for med students. EMRA has many interesting articles for med students and residents.

I would also definitely join AAEM, its free, you'll get a monthly newsletter detailing many of the business and legal aspects of medicine and it will be handy at the 25 or so 100% AAEM resident participation programs. Definitely join if you are itnerested in one of the programs that fully support AAEM. It will help u in the interview process.
