What would you say are the national average income of general dentists, and what would be the top 5 highest paid specialties? How would they compare to some of the medical specialties?
Depends. Associates dentists make anywhere from 100-300k. Owners of a general dentist practice don’t really have a cap. TanMan on these forums probably takes home 750k+ as a GP if not more. I think the average owner is somewhere in the ballpark of 220k. Specialists vary you can look the numbers up on the ADA. Medical specialists can make anywhere from 150-millions. But keep in mind the average dentist works about 35 hours a week while the average MD works 55-60. You can make plenty of money in any profession in dentistry and medicine. It’s really up to how hard you want to work for it.
Do you think you will make 750k dollars per year? Do you think you will make 350k?
But you’re going into healthcare to help people, right? Or at least that’s what your personal statement will say. What would you say are the national average income of general dentists, and what would be the top 5 highest paid specialties? How would they compare to some of the medical specialties?

Average MD does not work 55-60. Where did you get this idea?
On topic: Medicine pays more, on average. It's obviously specialty dependent if you want to get into the specifics.
I'm unsure of your current status, but I highly advice not choosing fields based on income potential. Firstly, you never know how insurance will change in the future. Secondly, life's too short - do what you are drawn to most.

The American medical association states that 1/2 of physicians work between 40-60 hours per week and over 1/4 of physicians work above 60. 55-60 is indeed about average.
I found the article, and I stand corrected.
However, I believe that it is little misleading to talk about MDs as a homogeneous group. The specialty you choose largely dictates your working hours. Typical EM doctors may work ~120 hours a month whereas neurosurgeons are likely working 65+ (per week) easily. Other, "cushier" specialties that come to mind are derm, FM.
Yes, there is a correlation between working hours and salary - but again, specialty dependent. A dermatologist and FM doc who work the same hours will not be compensated the same.
I suppose my point is this: there's so much variability that it's difficult to make broad observations about MD hours/salaries.
I agree. OP asked on average though. However yes it’s rediculously variable.
A dentist (owner) I know works 32 hours a week and makes more than his friend who' an anesthesiologists and works 50+ a week and on call.
Obviously this is not the average but it shows the potential in dentistry.
Oh and @Big Time Hoosier he is doing exactly what he wrote in his PS. Over 80% of patients at this office are on medicaid and this area really needed pediatric dentists
As a counter I know an anesthesiologist who makes seven figures. He employees several other associate anesthesiologists in a big group. There is potential in almost everything as long as you have business acumen. When it comes to your craft and its business you either "Expand or die" (Rule of acquisition 45).
I am curious how this dentist made medicaid profitable. Does he have many associates?
Read above about the endodontists that makes 7 figures in 6 months and take a vacation the rest of the year haha.
He has a partner and then 1 associate, has an oral surgeon come in 2-3 times a month. He has a dental anesthesiologist come in once a week for kids sedation cases. He also owns a orthodontics practice. He will be opening a full scope oral surgery department soon.
He bought huge land and built everything from scratch
Wow did he also invent cheese, airplanes, and electricity? Some endodontist, what a talent!
what are the hourly pays of gen dents in general vs specialists?
would you have any idea by any chance?Stop looking to people (dentists or physicians) who graduated 20 years ago as a sign of what new graduates make
Do you work for free? It better not be for more than the median American household income of 59k, otherwise you don't care about helping people.
Only people that are good at putting balls in baskets and nets are allowed to make a lot of money.
Indeed.Any answer choices with absolutes (such as “only” and “always”) are usually wrong answers.
