Hey everyone. I can't seem to find the thread on this, but does anyone know how a DO vs MD residency compares in terms of receiving a solid education? I know in academic institutions you are more likely to learn more and be more evidenced based, but is it true that you can't receive a comparable experience doing a MD community hospital program as with a DO program? I'm looking into applying to IM and don't think I stand much of a chance with MD match and I'm curious to know what my future holds. Are there any ranks lists? Thanks in advance!

From what I remember being said by people who know more than me, there certainly are some very good AOA programs, especially in IM. There are also some terrible ones. There are also some terrible ACGME IM programs. It really depends on the program.

That said, if you think you may at any point want a competitive subspecialty, you may want to aim either for an AOA IM program known for sending residents to fellowships (usually at a bigger academic center), or a mid-range ACGME academic program. It probably depends on your stats though.

In my most humble opinion, if you wish to pursue an ACGME fellowship, you would be very wise to pursue an ACGME residency...particularly if your interest is cards/GI/nephro
