It was kind of blatant, so obvious that I couldn't help but to laugh during the test.

The chick goes to the bathroom, comes back into the room, LEAVES again before she even reaches her seat, and then comes back to pull her iPhone out of the front of her pants. Now what amazes me is that I come from the "snitches get stitches environment." I have NEVER cared about cheating BUT I put in A LOT of hours studying and STILL struggled during the test.

I guess the point of this thread is for people to rant or give their opinions about cheaters/the situation. I'm considering sending an anonymous email to the teacher telling him to keep an eye out. I won't say any names in particular but this has been the first time that someone cheating has legitimately left me upset. I'm assuming because it's a difficult class and maybe cause the chick is a self-proclaimed "pre-med major" (she announced it while asking one of her many redundant questions during the lecture).

LET'S MAKE IT CLEAR, I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE HER NAME OUT NO MATTER WHAT. I just want there to be stricter observations so the playing field is level, that is all.

That's frustrating, but cheaters gonna cheat. Wait out the weekend and see if you still feel the same way on Monday before snitching.

Chances are she won't steal your spot in med school. Don't worry about it.

Hmm, you would think that the professor or one of the TAs would notice. She's only cheating herself because she'll get rocked by the MCAT or the Step exams since you can't text someone in the middle of them.

Before you do that, is she hot?

I wouldn't tell the professor, just ignore it and eventually she will get caught if she continue to blatantly cheat on the exam.

Who cares, bro.

As someone above said: cheaters gon cheat.

It's a habit that will most likely bite her one day or another, if not inside the classroom then outside it.

yeah who cares.

It's not like telling on her now will result in any action. Just a paperwork mess.

The professor was out of the room but I'm sure the TA isn't that oblivious. He was looking at me as I was laughing but I don't know what he was thinking.

Bro, SOOOOO close. I think about it every time, it's so disappointing. She has a NICE body but her face is just off in an unattractive nerdish way. Also, her (fake) laugh is pretty annoying.

I've never been one to snitch, I'm going to take the advice that someone recommended ITT and just wait it out.

I would say give her a firm talk about why cheating is wrong and make her do volunteering in a homeless shelter to make up for it.

That would be ethical but she's probably already doing something like that.

If we happen to cross paths I'm going to find some clever way to bring it up - jokingly.

Corner her, tell her you know what she did, scare her, proceed from there.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: That's awesome.

I've been in that situation many times too. I just laugh it off like you did. It's amazing how many people cheat and then play it off to their friends like they are something special because they did well on a test. Idiotas.

At least in my experience professors generally turn a blind eye to cheaters. Even when a TA gives the name and seat location theyll make an excuse like "oh she's my best student, her neck was hurting". My point is the prof will likely ignore any cheating accusations, especially from a student.

Proctoring exams, close to 30% of the class has their eyes on someone else's test at one time or another. There'd be no class left if all the cheaters were dismissed.

You should have told the test proctor.

i don't understand why people are allowed to leave during tests. it's one or two hours, come on.

You should have told the test proctor.

Correct.

At my undergrad, someone who spotted a cheater and did not report it violated the honor code just as much as the person who actually cheated.

I can't believe all of these people tell you to ignore it. The system works because of peer reporting.

Yes 😀, then blackmail her with something nasty....if you know what I mean.

But seriously. Do nothing. You will only create work and trouble for the professor, who probably doesn't care that much.

That situation always sucks. I'd say tell a TA because they are more approachable who can then report it to your professor and just let him/her handle it from there.

We TA's notice these things and discuss them with the instructor after class. Those students remain on the radar after that, regardless of whether the professor actually warns the offenders. The trouble is that there can be a lot of red tape around bringing a formal accusation, and the burden of proof is often on the teaching staff. I'll bet your TA noticed her behavior and will keep an eye on her.

So there are these things called curves...

Unless your class is on a true curve, her cheating won't affect you. Therefore the whole "leveling the playing field" argument is moot.

yeah, I don't think there is any way around it without looking inhumane?

In most of my tests you can't leave until you turn in the test. It is too easy to cheat if you can leave and come back anytime.

Turn her in. Plain and simple.

I always wonder why people have so much trouble or why these questions even come up. What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong. It is black and white, no grey here.

Oh, and don't do it anonymously. that's cowardly. Be bold about doing the right thing.

most people have enough difficulty keeping track of their own moral turpitude without worrying about everyone elses. relax, worry about yourself. Also, look up the psychological term "projection", might find it interesting

let us suppose that the class average is a B- and the grade ranges from an 80-84. it would have been a 79-83 but this girl cheated so she got enough points on her tests to bring the average up 1 point. you have a 79 so your grade is a c+ instead of a b-. but yeah you're right, it's only one grade on your app, no biggie.

often they ask: what if your close friends or roomate cheat and you saw them?
then it becomes interesting...
i wouldnt snitch on my roomates. if u would you are cold hearted

If it were a curved course I would turn her in, name and all. Seriously why protect someone who is screwing you over? Even if there wasn't a curve I still probably would send an anonymous email. I hate cheaters.

I'm not sure I agree as to whether it is in fact as "black and white" as you make it out to be. this actually reminds me of another thread with a very similar topic. it turned into a multi-page fiasco with one group claiming the other was overly sanctimonious, whiles the latter questioned the ethics of the former. so, clearly it isn't as clear-cut as you suggest.

Not sure what isn't totally black and white about looking up exam answers on your iphone during a test. That's cheating and I'd be surprised if the OP didn't have an obligation to report it per his school's honor code.

If you can find the answer on your iPhone it's not a hard exam.

A hard exam is when you have to derive equations, draw out reaction mechanisms and so on, things that cannot be googled.

i have been in OP's position few times and honestly I just ignore it and I would advise OP to do the same. I do this because i honestly don't care . This person is not going to be able to get into medical school by cheating on the MCAT. So, sooner or later, the cheater would realize that cheating can only take her so far ahead.
Plus, I dont want to be the one responsible for possibly ruining someone's future, even if snitching may be the right thing to do.

I agree that what they did is wrong, on the other hand I also realize that in the long run the only person they're actually hurting is themselves. As someone has already alluded to, when the person takes the MCAT, or a test where they don't have access to their iphone, they will have to rely on their own merit/wit...and considering they've come so far only by cheating, well...it probably won't end well for them.

Cheats usually meet their due at some point or another...

Depends on the subject. Google would be quite useful on a biology or anatomy test. Those can be difficult due to shear volume of information.

Hasn't like every formula/equation you use in undergraduate courses (especially general courses) been posted online anyway? Just curious.

I don't think so, even though biology is more memorization of facts than processes, the multiple choice questions are usually designed to be tricky, such as "which of the following populations are evolving?" you could google evolution but for one question, is it worth the hassle, I think not?

Also, there are usually enough questions that going to the bathroom to google one question just shows you were underprepared to begin with, since you should be able to move on and focus on the majority of the other questions.

well the obvious answer is ordering 100 pizzas to her house

Listen to all these gunners... jeez. Let her be. If she had to look up an answer on her phone, she probably didn't do very well on the test anyway.

And, how do you know she was cheating? Maybe she was having a personal/family crisis that she needed to attend to.

You don't know what gunner means.

Turning in someone who you think is cheating because you think the will get a better grade than you is a gunner in my book. If not a gunner, then definitely uptight. But, that's just my opinion.

In honor of all the political talk going on, let's qualify the statute just a slight degree more....

One that turns in someone who you think is cheating because you think the will get a better grade than you, thereby negatively affecting your placement in the curve, is a gunner.
