Saying stupid things during interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone else keep replaying the stupid things they say during interviews? Probably gonna get waitlisted from all these schools lol

Yes, absolutely. There was one particularly bad performance I had that I thought about every day for more than a month right up until that school accepted me. The moral of the story is that you'll have no idea how well your interview went until you hear back from them, so keep your chin up!

I spoke in a weird stereotypical African accent with fragmented sentence structure when I was introducing myself to my first interviewer , he just looked down and started to write in his notepad. IT was bad and I keep hearing myself speaking like that every time my mind wonders . Im not even African :punch::punch::rage::yeahright:

Clearly the only way to forget it is telling everyone on the most popular forum of the site.

At least you're not white. That would make it 10/10 embarrassing.

Sometimes, but lately only forty to fifty times each day

My problem is that I get too enthusiastic and excited. I sometimes don't know when to shut up. I have to control myself and be mellow during interviews...

Just think about how the next forty minutes can determine your future for the next four years. It's easy to be quiet when you're paralyzed by fear

Actually the adcoms replay from the automatic recording systems that most places put in the interview rooms now. We like to listen and laugh hysterically while we reject.

I'm joking.

Dumb things, stupid things, etc dont get notice. Inflammatory, arrogant, and obnoxious comments get noticed.
You say you're joking but I just interviewed at a school that actually does record their MMIs and watches them when deciding on applicants

I was only joking about the laughing hysterically. We just chuckle while watching the video
Oh gotcha. I feel like the laughing hysterically probably does happen then haha

I said a variation of "I'm not sure" 3 times during the 2 interviews. This was in August and I don't know the final result until February (Texas school). It's gonna be a longggg wait

But why?

You ask for reason to my interview madness? ?? I don't know it just came out, i never in my life even tried to speak like the tv stereotypical African and the fact that I actually have a accent made it just worst. The look on my interviewer face was priceless. You live and learn though right?

To answer your question, no I don't keep replaying in my head things I said in the interview.
I spent some time thinking through how I answered each question, what I would do differently in the future. After that, I'm purposefully not thinking much about the cycle/interviews until I have another interview to actually prepare for.

You are right. I think over my mistakes and improve for the next interview, but I feel like that I make a new mistake that I had not anticipated in the next interview (awkward handshake, too many verbal pauses, not giving the best answer to a question)...

I do not offend my interviewer or yell at them, but I am not perfect and do make mistakes and I'm hoping that the interviewers understand that...

Sometimes these things can play in your head over and over again, even for years. I still remember two little words I said so long ago that I almost have regretted the moment I uttered them. A man asked me a simple question and I turned and said "I do." Been suffering ever since

Sorry, anal hurts.

Think about it. Lol

The first step to not making mistakes in interviews may start elsewhere...

Personally, I find a forum dedicated to medical school applicants, admissions folks, students, etc a place you'd practice some level of... restraint. You're not hanging the boys at a bar. Just sayin.

In reality I think everyone makes mistakes and the admissions folks would look past them. That said, saying you don't yell at the admissions people isn't really confidence boosting.

It's ok, I made a pretty explicit Superbad reference while getting beers with a few other interviewees and caught a bunch of angry looks.

Lol she was making a joke about marrying a loser and I made a crude joke about sex. Not that big of a deal...

Also, if everyone acted polite and kind, then this forum would not be fun to read...yeah it's an educational tool, but can also be entertaining...

Welcome to the internet.

...HOW WAS I WRONG FOR SO LONG??? 😱 Also shoutout to @gyngyn for knowing way more about women's interview fashion than I ever probably will in my life. We are all not worthy.
Interview attire for men and women has relatively little to do with fashion (but, thanks!).

Everyone has things they fret over at an interview. I was 3,000% sure an awkward handshake cost me the spot at my top choice.
I am a female coming from a country where people don't greet by shaking hands, especially women. Instead we would bow our head. I always feel SO awkward when I shake hands with my interviewers, and I tend to bow my head a little bit too.

Practice.

You're not in the old country anymore, so learn.

I'm from 'murrica, I just do everything wrong. I bow a little, release at the wrong time, shake too hard or not enough. Just interview after me, I'll make you look good lol

I prefer a big slap on the back and a wink while almost yelling, "Great to meet ya!" before feigning sitting in the interviewer's chair just to let them know what's what.
