Okay, I am actually in my fifth year of school. Lets just say my second semester of sophomore year and my first semester of junior year ended up screwing me over pretty bad. I got a C in organic chemistry and like 4 other B-'s in those two semesters and dropped my gpa to a 3.1. After the end of my senior year I got my gpa up to a 3.43 and after taking 6 credit hours I have my gpa, after first semester in my 5th year, at a 3.456. My science gpa is at a 3.48 now. I am scared ****-less and I was wondering if you guys could give me some good advice.

I have about 4 months of shadowing experience where I shadowed different doctors but mainly in cardiology for about 75 hours, I have 6 months at Children's memorial hospital at about 55 hours. I also have been working at a phlebotomy lab for the past 6 months working with nursing home patients, drawing blood and what not with an MT for about a total of 80 hours. I also have also been a part of service fraternity at my school putting in about 25 hours of community service each semester for the past 2 and a half years. I am also currently doing research with a professor of mine since this past summer and am going to continue with it for at least another 6 months. I have also been on the student board of my mosque for the past 2 years helping to set up fund raisers and student meetings for students affiliated with the mosque and throughout the Chicago land area. I am also putting in paper work to get more clinical time in at a local hospital. I have two teachers that I know will give me great letters of recommendation.

I am currently studying for the mCAT but I have the hardest time concentrating cause I dont even know if I have a chance if I apply for the 2011 year. Please help me out with any advice, I would highly highly appreciate it. What kind of MCAT score should I be aiming for to have a competitve chance at getting into ANY MD school in the United States. My school is really hard about not letting students retake courses otherwise I would have taken organic chem again. Please help me out if you have any advice. What would I be aiming for on my MCAT, that is doable. Thank you guys and please try to respond.

P.S. I also have one more class to take for next semester to complete my molecular biology degree, should I take other classes with it to boost my GPA or should I just concentrate on my MCAT? I am taking that and 3 credit hours for lab also...

an important thing to consider is that your med school gpa will prob be lower than that, if your raised gpa was from retaking your classes.
id say a 34 mcat score would be good with your gpa.
i dont know much about ECS so i cant help ya,.

i like how you are not concerned with getting into a top tier. any med school is in my opinion an honor to go to.

I didn't retake classes, that is just from the last year and half of doing pretty well with my classes. As for extra curriculars, those are right there lol. I posted about shadowing, research, and what have not lol.

yeah but i mean i dont know much about that stuff so i dont know how yours compares with other people.

-You need to crack a minimum of 30 on the MCAT for MD schools
-You need higher than that to have a competitive score, especially with your gpa, 33+ would be great. Study like crazy, figure out what works for you. It sounds like you may have to put in extra effort for the 33+
-Get your gpa up, this might be difficult to do as a 5th year 2nd semester but do what you can. 3.5+ minimum
-Somewhat advanced notice but if you are graduating, get some general thoughts on what you want to do for your gap year. It will come up in interviews and what you're doing will go on your applications.
