Scary Article about Podiatry

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This blog is very old. The data is super outdated. Its an opionion, not an article. It would be an article if it was published in Podiatry Today...etc... It does not reflect Today's Pods role in diabetic foot care or limb salvaging and I truely believe that you can replace the term podiatrist in this blog and add any professional title..i.e accountant, lawyer etc. Your profession will be what you make it.

People post this website on SDN about once every 6 months and ask if podiatry is a bad field to go into. I'm pretty sure it was written like 12 years ago and clearly by a disgruntled man who is blaming the whole field of podiatry for his failures. You do NOT have to worry about this website, unless you think everything is going to be handed to you in life.

That website was a joke among my peers as it is very vague and and has no hard evidence, and as mentioned it's never updated. It seems to pop up every few years on this site or among 1st years. I wouldn't worry another 4 seconds about it, unless you are a poor student or just lazy. If you have a solid work ethic, you certainly can put yourself in a position to succeed. There are no guarantees, but I can guarantee that the website does not accurately portray podiatry.

Please don't believe everything you read online...

1) The article is very old.
2) Nothing is cited.
3) The website itself should be a giveaway to not take it seriously.

What's funny is that I'm willing to bet the vast majority in the profession have seen that site! In a sense, it has shaped the profession in a meaningful way - at least discouraging pre-pods to apply if they don't use other resources (SDN, shadowing, etc etc).

I mean, my college advisor tells women not to go into podiatry because a female student shadowed a local pod and all the pods in the practice told her that she has no place in podiatry as it is a "Men-only" profession....

I believe everything from angelfire.com as if it were 1999.

Tell your college advisor to google Dr. Emily Cook DPM, MPH and Dr. Stephanie Wu DPM, MSc before he/she further dissuades more talented female students from pursuing this profession. Shame on him/her.

She's actually really nice. But I think she feels bad about the student that sort of got ridiculed by local pods for trying to go into podiatry as a female. She doesn't necessary dissuade them, but tells them to consider the fact that they may be discriminated against. I'm not saying there is validity to that claim (this is the only time i've ever heard it), but it is something that some pods here in town have said....

I would say there are nearly as many women in my class as men, and looking at the upperclassmen the numbers appear nearly equal as well, the guest speaker at our white coat ceremony was a female pod who apparently has a very successful practice. This issue with women is not podiatry in particular, its medicine in general. In some circles they have gained a reputation for wanting 20hr work weeks so they can take care of their kids, taking lots of time off for pregnancies, etc. all the while taking up precious residency spots from male students who will be more than willing to work 60+ hrs a week the rest of their lives. No sexism, just what floats around the boards here, not saying i support it either. As I said this is in all specialties, not solely podiatry.
