Schmoozing the adcoms - Good idea?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There was only one comment that was highly offensive to my extremely delicate sensitivities, lol.

However, this is what I genuinely meant:
Having the very occasional prospective applicant, usually a nontrad, who has made some effort in getting guidance prior to applying being known a bit by adcom staff has helped some in the past. However, the few legitimate and sincere candidates are easy to spot...

My post was about getting guidance, not calling to shoot the breeze. Though, who knows? Maybe adcoms could band together and start their own phone-party line like the Psychic Friends Network. People call in for application advice and they get paid to "care" for only $3.99 per minute...

Are you saying only women engage in fellatio?

The thin skin of Millennials seems to do this to us older folks, especially those who don't get the point of gonnif's post, which was 100% about brown-nosing.

Gawd, what a thread detour!

If you want to bypass the bolded portion of gonnif's statement and dismiss the casual sexism of comparing brown nosing to fallacio.

@LizzyM Not sure if you actually trying to pass this one by with a comment like that: Did I wipe the server, 'like with a cloth or something'?
@Goro Just yikes. I had more respect for you before this post.

Seems all the adcoms came to the defense of this questionable post from Gonnif. That's unfortunate.

Long Analysis is Attached to Save Space.

Casual sexism isn't funny; do you agree?

@breezy16 @jaxon
How is that sexism?? Both men and women have patellas.
Apparently @Syns needs more exposure to worldly concepts in a diverse society. Not too mention a skill, at least conceptually, that will be important for advancement from med student to intern to resident

Accusation post disproved and rejected.

I see why you would think fallacio, but he mentions "darkly tinged nose" which suggests brown nosing. Also, I might add that if you ignore the nose comment, there's no way to distinguish fallacio and cunnilingus...And so it's still not sexism per se...

False attempt to clarify on something that was never implied was rejected.

The implication is clear. Give oral sex to the person in power, a man.

Although I agree cunnilingus can be performed in a similar position, "dirty on the sluts knees" is a throwback to years and years of disrespect towards women.

Of which only you were making the assumption.

The sexism isn't the act, it is the acted on. You are missing the point.

There can be a million interpretations. I yield to Occam's razor.
If fellatio results in a "darkly tinged nose," you might be doing it wrong.
Even if the patella comment referred to oral sex (which it clearly didn't, Occam's razor points towards it pairing with the dark nose --> brown nosing), the negative implication would be that the applicant uses favors instead of merit to get ahead, not that the applicant lacks power/body autonomy...

Appeals to Occam's Razor and fails in the process.

I am guilty of making those assumptions. I maintain I still am unconvinced of the alternative.
Are you unconvinced that a woman can be an adcom?

How very sexist and how very sad.

Admits guilt of suggesting assumptions and implications that were never made, effectively exposing himself to the crude behavior he sought to reject.

Either Syns is crudely throwing a strawman argument and fell flat on his face, or he was really angry about something and tried to fight an imaginary battle. That's not good either way.

I don't believe it was, "100% about brown-nosing."

The implication is clear. Give oral sex to the person in power, a man. The idiom about [dirty knees] is historic and has been used to debase a female performing fellatio on a man. Your generation left many tainted legacies, this gem is among them.

Exactly my point. Not only are women adcom members but also do not need to perform any sex acts to get there, or medical school for that matter.

This is what we Millennials call "getting roasted." Skin is often very thin after 3rd degree burns like this.

Accusation post disproved and rejected.

Nothing was disproved, only disagreed with.

False attempt to clarify on something that was never implied was rejected.

See above.

I am. As are you.

I maintain Occam's Razor to be in accordance with my claim. It is far more likely a specific idiom was use in it historic context that rewritten to serve a new purpose.

You're so focused on the dirty knees that you are conveniently missing the part about darkly tinged noses. He said darkly tinged noses AND dirty knees, a clear and unmistakable reference to brown nosing.

It's not the most obvious allusion here because of the reference to the darkly tinged noses, which is an obvious allusion to brown nosing. Unless you know of some way to perform fellatio that results in darkly tinged noses.

I'm not sure how you're interpreting the dirt stained knees without fellatio involved. I believe it was a combo reference to brown nosing and fellatio and I appreciate the ingenuity to apply them together.

Edit: I would like to mention that my initial interpretation was a bit more lewd as it involved being both face and knees making contact with dirt.

I also believe it to be a "combo" reference but don't applaud it.

Good luck with the VR/CARS section on MCAT.

Not at all. You're the one trying to start up an argument by misinterpreting gonnif's post to something it's not and made severe unsettling accusations. Most of the other members, including myself, understood what gonnif was saying without making/considering the sexual undertones.

I take it you are mad about something, but starting a flame war and accusing people of doing something they didn't are not the way to go. I recommend taking some time off from SDN and do something fun. We know it's a stressful place at times, so it helps to cool off.

Ok...yes I can be easily offended sometimes, but the following is why.

Think of this visual, since we're all writing visually now:

If the person on his or her knees is sporting a darkly tinted nose, consider the disgusting hygiene of the person in power. :spitoutpacifier::vomit::stop:🤢

And just to recap: OP will NOT be sporting dirty patellas or a dirty nose or mouth.

But applying that view makes zero sense in context. The goal was not to describe the applicant as powerless or objectified/used/debased, but as unethically willing/trying to offer favors in place of merit. The point stands regardless of whether it's a man or woman performing or a man or woman receiving. It isn't a commentary on adcom=powerful=man vs applicant=weak=female.

Stay out of New York City.

Can't help but laugh.

@efle

You've created your own argument. None of your comments relate to mine.

We disagree about the original post's intent.

Yeah, chit chats with medical schools doesn't sound so appealing. If anything they will just recognize to deny your application

What, you actually read his post as a gender commentary on the applicant/adcom power dynamic? It was clearly about applicants that lack merit and unethically try to substitute other things, in contrast to "legitimate and sincere" applicants. Absolutely nothing to do with the applicant being dis-empowered/debased/etc

You sound like the kind of thin skinned numbskull that will go running for mommy (and also probably a lawyer) when the attending yells at you for being stupid during rotations.

Skills like that and you think s/he'll ever make it to rotations??? No effing way

Well Syns seems to be making a pretty good name for him/herself on this forum.

I think @Syns has a good point, whether or not they are right about the original @gonnif comment.

But the rest of y'all making personal attacks need to work on your compassion. You can do better than this, seriously.

Shut this thread down!

No, Syns made an irrelevant point in an attempt to fight an imaginary battle and turn this thread into a flame war. Glad the discussion long ended.

Followed up by little thank you cards or other bribes of gratitude that the broke have to resort to. (Can't exactly send a bottle of Clichot just yet)

If you're gonna be this pretentious, at least learn to spell before name-dropping moderately priced champagne. "Veuve Cliquot"

In all seriousness, it sounds like you're pandering to the AdComs and not being genuine in your interest in contacting them. Only call/email/whatever if you have a true question or point of interest to discuss.

No, Syns made an irrelevant point in an attempt to fight an imaginary battle and turn this thread into a flame war. Glad the discussion long ended.
And personal attacks are relevant how, exactly...?

So I was pleasantly surprised when an adcom at Pritzer talked to me for a good 20 minutes over my post-bacc decision on the phone.

It was a spur of the moment decision, and now I'm thinking to just start calling all the schools I want to one day get into and find out who's who, and maybe get them jabbering on the phone or via email every so often.

Followed up by little thank you cards or other bribes of gratitude that the broke have to resort to. (Can't exactly send a bottle of Clichot just yet)

So...is that kind of relationship-building wise or detrimental in the long run? I mean, it will be the long run when and if I apply and it will definitely make them remember me.

She did say keep in touch and call back if I had any more questions.

Thoughts? Has anyone else done this? Do you think it helped? Or would said adcom have to excuse himself/herself from the admissions committee if on the off-chance he or she remembered the name of the applicant who came across her pile?

It means nothing for your admission to medical school. What really helps is your GPA and MCAT scores which is the backbone of your application, then there is your personal statement, your ECs, your LORs, and what kind of impression you make on the person that interviews you.

Fellatio seems to be the most obvious allusion here with the patellas, but maybe @gonnif was still talking about brown-nosing. As in, your nose is up the who-ha of someone standing up and so you're going to need to rest yourself on the knees, ergonomically speaking.

I'm sorry but this person just said who-ha.

I don't see any personal attacks. All i see are disapprovals and criticisms of Syns' posts, which are perfectly reasonable and appreciated.
I could go back and quote them, but it would be counterproductive. I've made my point. Have a good day!

So you're saying that it was a good point whether it was right or not? Am I understanding you correctly?
I meant was that they had a good point about the allusion to dirty knees having a very specific and gendered history. Whether or not the original comment was meant to describe fellatio.

I meant was that they had a good point about the allusion to dirty knees having a very specific and gendered history. Whether or not the original comment was meant to describe fellatio.

But this had NOTHING to do with the original comment. There was no reason to even make this statement.

Let's just continue to get offended by everything.

Casual sexism isn't funny; do you agree?

@breezy16 @jaxon
I just saw this; I do believe men and women both have knees and noses. Just because the general society sl**shames women for providing said favors does not mean men do not. Look at many of our lovely politicians and their endeavors in airports.
