Scholarships with stipend

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought UChicago gave good money, maybe some get stipends as well.

HPSP... j/k. But other than that, I doubt you're going to find much like what you're asking for. You're applying to professional schools. You're asking for a lot, really.

Keep in mind that scholarships are somebody else's money. When schools raise money for scholarships by soliciting donors, or when they spend the return on their investments (endowment funds) -- and the return on those investments has been poor in recent years as the economy has tanked -- they are trying to attract the best and the brightest to their school and give a leg up to those who have little financial support from family. (Ask yourself, if I needed to borrow $100 until the end of the year, as a matter of survival, could I do it? who would I call? Some people have nobody to call.). When it comes to borrowing for medical school, most grown-ups figure that: 1) >90% of medical students graduate and become licensed physicians and 2) the vast majority of licensed physicians are in the top 10% of income earners in America within 5 years of medical school graduation. So, when it comes to spreading around "free money" most people in charge of spreading it around will figure that people who are almost guaranteed to be high earners within the next 10 years can borrow living expenses now & pay that back later without winding up in poverty.

OK, so you are going to say that the debt makes it harder to go into low paying specialties in rural areas, etc. That's what loan repaying schemes are for. That pays a portion of your debt each year in exchange for your service.

Bottom line: Don't expect scholarships to cover living expenses in med school.

Ditto that, and note that chances are pretty darn good you aren't one of the "best and brightest" she mentions. Even if you find some schools with tuition+stipend deals, you're pretty likely to not get them, so don't let that steer your application process.
