Hey guys,

I am just finishing up my first year and I plan to apply for some scholarships this summer. I have been taking out students loans so far and want to reduce the debt. The only reason I did not apply for scholarships in high school is because I have no EC's, no volunteer experience, and it was not until my senior year that I worked towards straight A's.

I was just curious to know: As pre-meds, you achieve great grades, volunteer in your community and possibly work. What has been the success rate of achieving scholarships since you have been a pre-med in university?

Do you guys know of any websites or have any tips on writing scholarship essays and what not?

Here are some sites to get you started!

http://www.fastweb.com/

Thank you for the quick replies, however will those websites work for someone from Canada? A lot of the books which I see online on great scholarships essays and what not are for students about to enter college.

Just a warning, I wasted a lot of time sifting through fastweb and applying to various scholarships. I never even heard back from the ones I applied to. I feel like a lot of the scholarships on there are junk and unrealistic. Hopefully you can figure out how to find the good ones.

Check through your school's financial aid office as well. They usually have relevant national scholarships as well as local and school specific ones.

Would you say that it is just best to apply to the ones that are offered by the institution that we attend?

Your school might help streamline some scholarships for you. Often the most reliable and obtainable ones are the ones offered through your school and major.

How legit are these websites?

The Scholarship Resource Center at my undergrad gave me those links, but people have different experiences like ohshxtsaty. They're really just search engines and you would still have to keep a watchful eye on what scholarships seem legit, for example I avoid the sweepstakes and contests that just ask for all my personal info as the entire application.

👍 Your FA office can give you the best advice that fits your particular needs

I'm not sure what school you attend but I think it is safe to say that almost all universities will have some resources to scholarships you can apply for.

For my school, I go to the website for the honors college. They have a listing of scholarships that anyone can apply for. Many of them have GPA requirements, usually a 3.0.

Additionally... almost everybody at my school is some sort of science/engineering major so my school has many scholarships listed that are geared towards science and engineering majors.

I would definitely check with your school first. Ask the financial aid office as well as your academic advisor. I would also go through the website and search your school's website for "scholarship" and see what shows up. As a last resort, I would use fastweb and other online scholarship databases/search engines.

This. I had the same experience with big national scholarships even when consistently being successful with some of the local ones. There are just way too many people writing 1 page essays on "how to change the world" for a good shot.

That being said, another suggestion: Check your newspaper in the spring. Around here, they post a bunch of local community ones not through specific universities. Also see if your parent's place of work offers anything (or your own if you work). Those scholarships have been much more realistic for me.
