Hello everyone! I would appreciate some thoughts on my school list. I've already submitted my primary (and it was verified) Are there any schools I should remove, add, or swap out?

Stats:

  • MCAT: 521 (131/127/131/132)
  • Biochemistry Major, Sociology Minor (cGPA: 3.91, sGPA: 3.95)
  • NJ Resident
  • 23-year-old male ORM
  • 2 gap years
  • Might be important: I only seriously committed to being "premed" at the end of my sophomore year. I was in biomedical engineering before that. And being an out-of-state student during undergrad, kind of hurt consistency. Also, opportunities during my junior year were pretty affected by Covid.
  • So several of my experiences start in my senior year, or the gap year I've had so far (graduated May 2023). Also had to take the MCAT during the gap year.
ECs:

  • Clinical Volunteering - 460 Hours (100 hrs at Hospital 1: mix of helping patients access and use the patient portal, as well as visiting/conversing with very sick and elderly patients - very similar to hospice volunteering, 60 hrs Hospice Volunteering: visited one or two elderly patients at different hospices, 300 hrs at Hospital 2: volunteer in the ER, again assisting patients in any needs)
  • Non-Clinical Volunteering: ~ 250 Hours (ESL Teacher: teach English conversation/grammar to a class of recent immigrants, one of my favorite activities)
  • Non-Clinical Employment: Tutor (100 Hours)
  • Research: ~ 400 Hours (Research assistant in 2 Psychology/Neuroscience Labs, no pubs or posters
  • Shadowing: 60 hours in the ER/Cardiology
  • Leadership: Secretary of my college's Pre-Med Club (100 Hours) ( I know it's a premed club lol, but it was useful to me as a member when I was changing paths.)
  • TA for 2 courses: 150 hours
  • Hobby: Gardening
Not in my primary: I will start scribing in mid-July. I knew about this when submitting my primary, but since it hadn't started yet I thought it was wiser to just bring it up in secondaries, rather than just listing projected hours, with nothing complete yet. I'll be doing it for a year, so I'm expecting at least 1000 hours (unless I want to do something else later on). I'll also be continuing a lot of the activities I've been doing into the cycle (like the hospital volunteering and the ESL class.)

Here's my school list:

  1. Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
  2. Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine
  3. Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

Wayne State and Virginia Commonwealth may "yield protect" with your stats. You could add these schools:
NYU (free tuition)
Boston University
Mayo
UMass
Brown

Can you highlight your activities during your 2 gap years? The numbers seem low for clinical and nonclinical experience. I expect at least 1000 hours in something you have done, not planned. What am I missing?

Sure. The 300 hours of volunteering at Hospital 2, my MCAT, the shadowing, the ESL class are all from the time I graduated last May. My senior year is when I did majority of my research, the volunteering at Hospital 1. To be honest, I never even really considered my senior year as a gap year, because it was essentially the beginning for me.
