Hello, I have received a 36Q (12PS-13VR-11BS) and stand currently with 3.1-3.2 GPA at a top five institution. I am currently on my fifth year, working/researching/and taking CC classes and plan to go back to my home institution for a full year of full courseload to boost up my GPA further. I should end up with around 3.35 GPA by the time I apply and with a dramatic upward trend (3.1 on first 4 years, and 4.0 on last two years). Despite this, I understand that my chances are still not very good for any medical school particularly since I am a California resident and Asian male. My first four years are also plagued with acad. probation for not meeting units requirements.

Also I would like to note that I have well-focused set of extracurriculars (around 3-4 pubs in 2-3 different research projects; ample free clinic/shadowing/public health internship experience; and excellence in an instrument (competition wins at national/intentional level) --- and many of these activities also share an overarching theme)

I am also starting to work on my personal statement, an entire year before they are to be sent.

Because of my slim chances, I am planning to apply to SMP programs this upcoming cycle but I would still like to give it a shot for 2012-2013 application cycle with 3.35 and 36 by applying VERY broadly and early. Please comment on my school list, which has been carefully selected based on their GPA/MCAT averages, OOS-friendliness, and some other factors. Especially on the second list (less certain), I would like to hear about ones that should be DEFINITELY (without a shade of doubt) taken out and also ones that are not in the list that I should give consideration.

Schools that I am almost certainly going to apply to:

1university of alabama
2university of kentucky
3stony brook university
4wake forest university
5the commonwealth
6eastern virginian medical school
7virginia tech carilion

Going by sector 9s tables, you have about a 60-70% chance of getting in somewhere, and that number is probably higher considering the high number of schools to which you plan to apply. A 3.35 is not very high, but a 36 MCAT will definitely help you, so long as you don't let that score expire. I'd say you'll be just fine, but apply to a few linkage SMP programs just to be sure. In fact, you might consider doing that instead of an extra undergrad year.

Getting advice from someone with more broad knowledge will help you more, but as someone very familiar with UNC I think that someone of your stats probably won't have much success applying there. Unless its a dream school for you I'd probably cut that from your list

Alabama is NOT OOS-friendly - Dont waste your money on that one in my opinion.

Firstly, with a GPA that non-competetive, do NOT bother applying to non-CA state schools. I see you have some historically black colleges on the list; since you're not a URM, you won't have much chance at those either.

You MAY have a chance with the below if you can indeed get your GPA >3.4. Oh, and you're fine for any DO school.

I agree with the above poster in that applying to non CA state schools would be a waste of time for you.

Have you considered applying osteopathic?
