I remember seeing a ranking list that was not based on the US News. It was on some journal article or something. Does anyone who knows what I'm talking about mind posting it here?

Not entirely sure what criteria the USNWR uses, but I feel like this study was substantially more thorough taking everything into account. I too would like to see an expanded list, maybe including the top 50 or 100.

Lol @ UCSF=#17
I think it dropped because of their strength in primary care. I believe a large portion of their grads go into FM for underprivileged areas which greatly detracts from their ability to write grants/conduct research as an academic.

It seems the whole point of the article was to judge the schools based on the graduates they produce rather than the faculty that exist at the school. No one is denying UCSF as a powerhouse research institution, they just have a broader focus than some of the other more purely research-focused schools which only crank out academics.

I fail to understand how their grads relate to their ability to write and receive grants, which is a function of the researchers and clinicians working at UCSF, not where the grads go to residency.

Here you can see that UCSF receives the most research funding out of any medical school.

I know they receive a ton of funding, and I'm not arguing their alumni impact their current faculty's ability to generate it. I'm saying this ranking is more about which school produces the best research physicians, not where these physicians currently work. For example, a prominent faculty member at UCSF who cranks out RO1's but went to Yale for med school is counted in Yale's favor rather than UCSF.

It's just an alternative ranking. Much like some of the undergrad ranks may use starting salary of graduates or number of billionaires among alumni rather than current faculty achievements.
