Hey all,
I received a 31O on the MCAT and graduated early May with a degree in bio from FSU with a cGPA of 3.56 and sGPA of 3.57.

The first two years of undergrad I got about 150 hours of community service through a volunteer org. I was on the board and led volunteer trips with that org. After that I became really involved with my church and campus ministry and though I still did volunteer work from time to time I did not record any of it. In my senior year I worked for the biology department as a senior T.A. for the non-major lab (I taught) and the lecture (I tutored).

I also worked for one of my professors as a lab assistant for a year and a half and b/c I had him for ecology I asked him for a rec that I expect to be great. My non-science is from my spanish teacher whom I got along really well with throughout the 3 or 4 classes I had with her though one class I got a B-, hopefully a good rec (?). The last rec is from my histology prof who I only knew because the class had only 17 people and I got an A in it.

Schools I planto apply to (I'm a Florida resident):
UMiami, FSU, UF, USF, UCF...that's all I know for now.

Anyway are there any suggestions for other schools?
What do you think my chances are for UM? Its my ideal school as of now.

Sorry for the long post, thanks a lot for reading it!

What is your clinical experience and how much physician shadowing have you done? Would you characterize your paid lab assistant job as "doing research," or do you have another research activity to list? It looks like you have teaching, leadership, and other community service.

University of Miami has median stats for accepted students of 3.8 and 32. You are somewhat below both. You can look at the School Selection spreadsheet stickied to the top of this forum to find less-selective schools to apply to.

Average stats for matriculants are usually lower than those for acceptees. Usually you can find these numbers on the school's website. So you might be closer to being in UMiami's target zone than it appears, OP, provided you have the usual and customary clinical exposure.

Thanks for the replies.

My lab job was only a job. I worked with beetles and parasitoid wasps and made populations while adjusting ratios of two types of beans and numbers of wasps and beetles added. It was all done to contribute numbers for my profs research.

I haven't done shadowing except through a program I did at UM but I hope to change that once I get back from out of the country. I have also applied to a very competitive internship in Tallahassee and if I get that I will accumulate a lot of one on one patient experience as well as other practical skills.

As for Miami I know I am lower than their standards but I'm set on their school right now and hoping to get in! 😀 I do know about the school spreadsheet but the most updated version does not have the option (to my knowledge) of using matriculant stats.
