Hi,

I'm turning in a late application for this cycle. I live on the east coast and my school of choice is ACOM. They accept scores as old as four years. My score is from September 2009, making it 3 years and 5 months old.

In looking at other schools that are still open the following somewhat more close to home:

Campbell (NC)
Lake Eerie (FL)
Lincoln Mem (TN)
William Carey (MS)

Each of these lists "3 years" for MCAT. Unsure if that meant less than three or just less than four, I started calling. The only one I could get in touch with was William Carey where a lady told me no way would they look at my app. However, if I had applied in August it would have been fine. Since, it's all the same cycle, I thought that was silly.

Should I apply to these schools anyways?

Other schools that do explicitly accept 2009 scores are:
Marian (IN)
A.T. Still (AZ)
Pacific NW (WA)
Touro (CA)
Touro (NV)

I have no desire to move that far away from any family, but am unsure if that would be better than potentially just applying to ACOM, or applying to ACOM and schools that won't look at my scores, not getting in, and then having to go through this entire process again.

I applied MD twice - in 2008 and 2009 - probably not broadly enough. I have a 28R and a 3.5 gpa for both science and non-science.

Thanks for your help!

DO NOT apply this late. The classes are for the most part full. Apply June 1st and you should be fine, Do not apply with the idea that you can't be far from family. No guarantee you won't have to move for med school or residency. You need to have the attitude that you probably will have to move to follow this path.

I guess I felt there was move away and move AWAY.

The only school that would take my current score next year would be ACOM - unless they change their rules. Right now it says four years or less is preferred, but other scores would be considered.

For any other school I would have to study for and take the MCAT again.

Are your suggestions still the same?

From what I've read, ACOM still has about 50 seats open, though that could be a false rumor.

Thanks.

ACOM is starting to fill up fast. Almost everyone in the latest interview groups have been put on the wait list, and that list is getting rather lengthy. I'd say it's a slim chance at this point that you'd get in this application cycle, but if they'll take that score next year, you'd be golden.

If you have already had your AACOMAS verified and have sent in a secondary you might have a slim shot. You're a strong applicant. Why did you wait so long to apply? Good luck with your application and for your sake I hope I'm wrong!

You're not getting in this late. Especially not with a 3.5/28. Retake the MCAT and apply next year.

I agree that you probably won't get in this cycle...however, being an AL resident, ACOM would be your best/only shot if you were to try. If you are still interested in ACOM for next cycle and they take MCAT scores from 2009, I am willing to bet that you will at least get an interview there.

...and count your lucky stars that there is a school out there that will accept a >3 year old MCAT score. I wouldn't wait around for ACOM to change their mind, apply right away. 3.5, 28 is going to be above average for ACOM (not an attack on ACOM, just being realistic) I'd do it and hope for a lot of class movement, especially if the alternative is to restudy and retake the "expired" MCAT score

Thanks! I'm fighting some confidence issues. I went with my brother to his interview there and decided to give it another go. He was fortunate and had an acceptance not two hours later - but that was mid December.

I haven't actually submitted my app yet, but it is nearly done. I will have letters from two profs and a strong letter from a DO.

I would wait 'till next season, but hate to have to take the MCAT again. What a nightmare that would be.

You haven't submitted your AACOMAS yet? ACOM will fill its class by the time you get verified, receive the secondary, complete the secondary, and actually have ACOM look at your secondary.

Not necessarily. My primary was verified on December 20th and I got a secondary on the same day later that afternoon. I turned it in the following morning and received an interview invite within less than one business day. I think if the application is extremely competitive, then they will speed up the process for her.

Yes it is a very long shot, but you never know. I would think that the verification would be almost instantaneous at this point so if she could get the other stuff turned around extremely quickly she would have a slim chance. That being said I'd bank on applying June first for the next application cycle.

December vs March. I wonder if there's any difference.. Any difference at all.

You will never get it all in and done on time. There are secondary applications etc. Don't waste your money. You are way way way too late. I would be studying for the MCAT again and just take it in April or May this year and apply in June.

Call ACOM and ask them what they think...or ask them if they will take your 2009 MCAT when you apply in June. If they say yes, Boom, no MCAT retake necessary....if that is where you want to go.

Also get it in writing.

I'm sorry to say, but I think you waited too long. The ACOM primary application deadline is Friday (as it is for SOMA and MU-COM as well), meaning you have less than two days to submit it. Even if you rushed to get it in in time, the likelihood of them reviewing it fast enough to interview you by April, when their interviews end is slim.

As far as next cycle goes, do you really just want to apply to one school? Seems risky to me.

Will it really be a problem retaking it? Get a 28 or above and you'd be in good shape, >30 and I'd throw in some MD programs. Just make sure you apply early.

Also, what MCAT score did you have before the 28? (The one you used for the 2008 cycle). It sounds like you had 2 MD cycle attempts, but the second one must have been late too since you took the MCAT in September. I say take it again, score >30 and have your pick of DO schools and maybe even a couple MD ones. But be sure to apply early and broadly.

I'm just saying...I have no idea where you might live to have all of those places "close" to home lol

In regards to the others...yeah. I'd have to agree. You would probably have a good chance at all of those schools with your stats, esp. if you applied for next cycle. If I were crazy, I'd apply to Campbell though. You are above average and I would be eager to get on with my life, but that's a last option kind of thought process.

If you take the MCAT again, you may do better? I find being 3 years out of practice probably a little cruddy, but it's worth a shot.

Almost everyone in the latest interview groups have been put on the wait list

For which schools? Or is that just a general statement? Besides, I'm sure there's some movement off the waitlist.

Also, OP, if you are going to apply this cycle, I hope you do it by today, but honestly I think you'd do well studying for the MCAT, taking it again, and applying broadly next cycle. Obviously, double check with your schools of interest, but if they don't accept it next cycle, then do the retake.

OP you are in a rough situation. 2009 MCAT is accepted at several schools...but being so late, you are very very unlikely to even interview anywhere. While seats are open, interview slots are all but closed just about everywhere and wait lists are long at many institutions.

You'll have to start giving some real thought to retaking the MCAT, because I dont know of too many schools that will take 2009 next cycle.

Good luck, and dont give up if this is what you want out of life!
