I am a sophomore taking General Chemistry; next year, my junior year, I will be taking Inorganic. All of these courses are prerequisite for Biochemistry. The school that I attend only offers biochem in the spring, which means I will not be able to enroll this course until the semester of my last year.

I will beging to apply to dental schools after my junior year when many of my other prerequisites (bio, inorganic, organic) are completed.

---- My question is this: would the fact that I did not take biochemistry when the application time comes serve as a hurdle? Or would I get accepted , provided that I keep up my grades, with an agreement that I will complete biochem the semester prior to enrolling in dental school?

...same thing with physics. I also have not taken physics yet and it may not be probably until late junior year/senior year.

You will be OK! That is why on the AADSAS application they provide you with space to jot down your planned coursework, because you will not be done with everything before you apply. Some schools may have you to make your acceptance contingent upon the successful completion of your planned coursework. For my major at my school, I will not take Biochem until the last semester of my Senior year. I have known people that have applied before they finished their pre-reqs and guess what....they got into dental school. They got into dental school even before they were finished taking their pre-reqs. I know that there are some new required pre-reqs, but the same rules should still apply. That's my opinion, but to be safe, ask the schools ADCOMS about it.

Best of luck!!

I'm almost positive physics is a prereq for dental school. Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure that you have to had completed Chem, OChem, Gen Bio, Physics, English and Math. As far as biochem, I know VCU requires it and so probably others do too now...they may accept you though as long as you get above a C before you enroll...not really sure. My accept. letter stated right on there that the spot offered is with the understanding that you have to keep a decent GPA in your current semesters classes.

I know that the Univ. of Washington requires biochemistry, and microbiology, in addition to the standard required courses most d-schools have. You don't necessarily have to have taken biochem to apply, and even get interviewed, but an acceptance would be contingent upon satisfactorily completing the required courses at that specific institution.

Both UCSF and UCLA require biochem, and they let you take it up until the spring semester before you start dental school. I'm taking biochem next semester and applying this cycle.

Tufts requires biochem.

Even though it's not required everywhere, I'm pretty sure it's looked for ...

yea you're fine as long as you finish your requirements before you graduate

UNLV requires Biochemistry

Indiana University as well!!

I would guess that due to the increase in both the number and quality of applicants towards dental school, that there will be more and more schools requiring courses that were until now only recommended. Biochemistry and Anatomy are examples of these types of courses.

Just choose Bio Major🙂 that way prerequisites will be completed naturally ~
