I've always read that your calculated science GPA counts any math courses. I have taken calculus (a 4 hour class at my school) and statistics (a 3 hour class) and made A's in both, so I have been figuring out my science overall using these two grades as well. Today I was told that math does NOT count .... I've looked on the AADSAS website but the most updated version I could find was 2011. It says that math was counted then, but does this still apply for anyone applying this upcoming cycle?

I was speaking today with someone who's been accepted; he's been trying to tell me the ins and outs of getting accepted as well and what to focus on. We got on the topic of what goes into science GPA and he claims that when he filled out his app that it stated math wasn't going to be considered with the science GPA which really surprised me. I've been banking on the two extra A's and it'd really hurt me if they weren't counted. I've emailed them, just figured I'd post here and see if I could get a response quicker 🙂

I don't remember math not being calculated...

From the AADSAS website:

Q: How are ADEA AADSAS GPAs calculated?
A: ADEA AADSAS reports a variety of GPA calculations to the dental schools. The grade conversion table and rules used to calculate GPAs can be found Here. ADEA AADSAS reports: overall GPA (undergraduate, graduate and combined); and these undergraduate GPA's: biology-chemistry-physics GPA (BCP); science GPA (all science courses including math, natural sciences and BCP; non-science GPA.

Somewhat related question: Engineering courses counted towards sGPA? I've seen the AADSAS list that has "engineering" listed, but I'm wondering if this is the case. I have a Bioengineering degree with Biology, Chemistry and Math minors (I was a pre-dent Biology major and VCU-accepted back in 1998, but declined and finished with Bioengineering), so I'm curious as to how the 3 years of engineering coursework will play on my sGPA.

Note that after having reached the pinnacle of my engineering career (and burnout with the corporate world), I am re-applying this summer for 2014 matriculation to finally become a dentist. DAT test date is July 11th. I will be completing the AADSAS application as soon as it is made available in June. I have all pre-requisites (3 times as many as required for admission).

I believe all of your engineering coursework, as well as the required coursework for minors in all of the above will play into your sGPA. BCP GPA may be more difficult to define, as you may have some overlap with biological engineering classes. Your best bet is to contact AADSAS and get their word.

Your bioengineering classes will count under bio in your BCP. I attached the guide you're looking for. Any questions you have about a specific class has to be emailed to AADSAS, their word is above all.

Math IS part of your science GPA, however there's a sub-GPA called BCP GPA that is solely of Bio/Chem/Physics. What falls into BCP category is very broad and is viewable on the ADEA site.

I actually have this guide and that is what I was referring to in my previous response. However, it's pretty general and says "Engineering", but I will assume that all of my engineering courses will count as science just to be safe.

Thanks for the response.
