This ay be a dumb question but when people post science GPA, is that supposed to include every science class you have ever taken including upper division? Or is it supposed to be the specific science classes required for each vet school? So would classes like physics and math be added into a 'science' GPA?

Every science class. That includes basic bio, physics, general chemistry, etc.

Every science class. Physics and math count towards it. At my college, Animal Science classes counted towards it as well. So the class I took where I trained a horse? Counted. Where I learned how to butcher animals? Counted. Where I learned the basics of riding a horse? Counted.

Was quite nice. However, where I got a C in Pharmacology? Counted. 🙁

I was also curious too. How would people classify neuroscience classes (behavioral neuroscience, psychopharmacology) that are in the psychology department? (keeping in mind that there is no separate neuroscience department at my school, nor any neuroscience classes in the bio department). Because that's 5 classes right there, for me.

As always, the schools vary. Illinois did not count my Animal Behavior class, even though it was taught by the biology department and was very much a broad perspective on the ecology and evolution of behavior. We covered communication, game theory, social systems, learning, etc.

It's not necessarily every science/math class. It varies by school.

For example, I heard heard someone on a UF adcom specifically say that animal science classes don't count. But judging by some of the above posts, they might count at other schools.

Furthermore, some schools have a "science GPA" while others have a "pre-req GPA." I would imagine that this could cause further variance.

Why can't all schools just have the same, standardized requirements? 🙄

Illinois told me my science GPA was 2.9

At every other school it was at least a 3.3

I swear, they ONLY counted the few classes I did crappy in, and none of the good ones

So by "science classes" the schools are referring to physical science classes and not social science classes?

I know that Illinois counts all math classes and not animal science classes

Yup, they counted Calc and Stat and Probability, but I don't think they accepted anything in the AnSci Department. So, no equine lameness, equine diseases, nutritional biochemistry, repro physiology, repro management, etc. Can't remember if they included Anat/Phys.

Basically, none of the fun classes counted!

agree with everyone who said every school is different. they either calculate it out for you (IL) or tell you how to calculate it and what they want you to include

I think VMRCVM's science GPA was just for the prereqs--Physics, OChem, Biology, Biochem... So General Chemistry and the other science classes didn't count.

UCD's "science GPA" is "prereq GPA" 👎

I was just going to say this. I learned this a bit abruptly in my Davis interview this morning. It went something like "You're last 45 units Gpa is really good and your gre score is very high, but your science gpa is a 2.9. Why?" Which definitely shocked me because in my calculations my science gpa is at least a 3.2. Certainly threw me off guard for a second. 🙁

bumping this thread after searching...so does this mean that all of the UC Davis prereqs (including the social science/English/stats) are included in the "prereq" gpa or is it really just the core science prereqs that are included in the gpa?

I think when people generally post science GPA, it includes all science classes. And like noted, schools do it different. Western's science GPA is only the science pre-reqs and the pre-req GPA is the rest of pre-req.

I wonder if Computer Science classes should be included in the Science GPA.

I'd hate to think I aced Introduction to C for nothing!

It made you a better person? 👍 And you'll be the only vet student in your class who knows what it means to dereference a pointer.

I wouldn't expect it to be counted.(This coming from a guy with his BS in CS)

I still struggle with calculating my science GPA. I got a biochem degree so I had to take a lot of extra science classes. Some of them (physical chemistry 1-3 with one lab, a polymers/coatings class) are not at all relevant to vet school. And then in ochem, biochem, and physics I exceeded the amount of credits required by most schools. I could understand ochem, physics, and biochem classes still being counted towards a science GPA, but what about the non-life science classes that are completely unrelated?

For UC Davis, just the science prereqs are counted in the prereq GPA. There is no other calculated science GPA (unfortunately, since my best grades are in the upper division sciences )

Yeah. That really s*cked for you. Maybe you could have been notified of your acceptance even earlier than the rest of us than you alreadty did.
