People,

I am about to give up. My score is a solid 52%. I average about 47-53%, sometimes I get at 58%.

I started this all with scores in the 50's to 80%. I just did 4 in a row and got the same freaking averages. 😡

I read over the answers really carefully, look things up, write them down. I keep waiting for the 'light' to kick in and my scores shoot up. Not happening. I am 60% done. I feel like I am working questions better, reading more carefully - still, score don't budge. I am not at a passing score. I'm not stupid, and I am working my $$$ off here. Is there anyway to go in with these averages and actually pass??? (no, I'm thinking.) 🙁

Hi,

I'm sorry you're having a difficult time.....I'm sure you probably already thought of this, but one thing that has really helped me is to not think so hard. i didn't do that great on step 1 and i think it's b/c i psyched myself out. so far on UW q's i've been doing so much better than i ever did on kaplan for step 1. this time though, i read the last sentence, read the question then in my head think of the answer, usually find it and move the hell on. if i can't think of an answer i obviously look at their choices and try to do a good guess but still move on quickly.

i think we can be our own worst enemy. for however much you're able to, don't obsess so much. you wouldn't have gotten this far if you didn't know your stuff. just relax, answer questions and move on, and don't freak out too much about how a silly quesion bank says you're going to do.
good luck....

You should keep in mind that the ONLY exam in which the score counts is the actual Step 2 CK exam itself. There's correlation with UW, QBank etc but you still have to take the real exam and that's the score that gets recorded. With scores like yours, there's a good chance you're much weaker in certain areas than others. Are there any obvious weak spots? If so, that's where you should focus. One thing I did was I ranked the subjects in terms of most questions asked and then separately ranked the subjects in terms of which ones I was scoring highest and lowest on. This helps you see where you're losing most of your points, which will help focus your studying. You can learn from the explanations as well. You should go back and really focus on getting down the information in FA (or whatever source you read) before doing more Qs. When is your test? For the material I was weak on despite having read it in FA, I turned to Deja Review. Many people have trouble with NBME-authored exams (myself included) Most of us are not stupid; neither are you!

Good luck!

Check out Deja:

Btw, I still have the list of topics I read individually in Deja. I used it more to tie up loose ends from FA and my other studies than as a 1ary source. PM me if you'd like me to send it to you.

Same here. In my last blocks before step II, I was scoring a magnificent 50% average and still managed a very respectable pass with lots of room to spare. Just know that you are learning the material and will likely do just fine. There is always going to be material you do not know. I am not sure it's worth postponing the exam on the off chance that you will actually be able to hang on long enough to learn much more of it.

One other thing that helped was taking NBME 1 and 2 and passing both, so I believed that I would probably pass Step II even on my worst day.
