The priest was called today for my best friend's mom, who is currently in an induced coma, after battling leukemia for a long ten years. I'm going into heme/onc and beating this bastard of a disease.

Sorry to hear about that. These types of things really are the worst. 🙁

That's the spirit and passion one needs, I hope you keep it alive through ur premed, med & residency years.. 👍👍👍

A similar situation, even closer to home, affected and inspired me. It is almost laughable when I see threads about people choosing specialties for lifestyle/money.

A source of inspiration on those late nights studying in the library, those chapters that you just don't understand, or those financial issues that seem like they will consume you, will prove invaluable.

I sincerely hope and pray that this particular aspect will not be applicable to you, but the fact that someone so close to you, that taught you so much, made you who you are, is looking down on you and guiding you from above, can be strangely and deeply comforting.

Good luck and God bless

Both my grandfathers lost their lives due to uncontrolled diabetes when my parents were only teens. Living in a 3rd world country without adequate healthcare can blow sometimes😡

Endocrine or Heme/Onc would be my specialties of choice should I end up specializing in Internal Med

I never know what to say in these types of situations, but...I hope she has found some form of peace and happiness during her life.

Best of luck in your journey, OP.

Sorry to hear about that.

My boyfriend's mom is also in a similar situation (ovarian cancer). He's a nurse so he can provide a lot of in-home care for her, but it's been getting worse lately.

Make sure that your friend has advanced directives, etc. ready.

ten years 😱

i'm so sorry to hear this. i wish you a lot of luck on the road to a meaningful career... in oncology, if that's what you end up choosing.

I'm probably not going into heme/onc, but a very very very close family member's leukemia is basically what inspired me to leave my well-paying career and go to med school. sending good thoughts to your friend and his family

I lost 3 grandparents to cancer...the more oncologists, the better. Best of luck to you and your friend's family.

Sorry to hear about that. I lost my mom to Pancreatic Cancer when I was 16. I'm going into Heme/Onc to fight this damn disease as well.

Good choice.

My mom is a breast cancer survivor, and just finished treatment for ovarian cancer. Good luck makeshift123! 👍

YUP I have a strong hate for the leukemias. My dad died relatively young after a year's worth of fighting it--AML.
The induction was so sucky, I knew he wasn't going to go for the consolidation--and he wouldn't go for the mini-allogenic. I did have a nice final vacation with him that summer.

It is a horrifying cancer; and the treatment is more horrifying that other cancer treatments.

I'm all for someone killing it!👍

So sorry to hear about that. Best wishes to you and your loved ones.
