but, i know this underclassman at my school that is applying for dental school. This person is very smart, but is really cuthroat about studying and homework assignments. I really hate this person. Worst part is this person is trying to go to my dental school...

Agree with the previous posters he may be a jerk to you but who are you to determine who is a jerk and who isn't. You need to chill out! Maybe you should start thinking "wow, they let a jerk like me in, why not him?" or "Is it really worth it in the long run to try to ruin xxxx's future (and jepordize mine in the process)?" If this hate is comsuming you just go to another one of the three you have been lucky enough to be accepted to. I am surprised this is coming from you dkny2kx, you must have had a bad day. Cheer up buddy! BTW, I seriously doubt that you are the only one on here that has had this thought.

Is this person bragging about it? Showing off? Putting down other people? If not don't let this individual bother you. That's the way he/she is. As long as the person is minding his/her business that's the way he/she chooses to approach school work. Also there is more to being a dental student than becoming a nerd.

The OP is clearly showing major signs of insecurity and thus jealousy. I can imagine him (or her) "accidentally" sabotaging a minor part of a patient's mouth just so he can feel better about himself. And one can also see why he's received so few interview invites. (Hint: Personal Statement, Letters of Recommendation.)

Interesting conclusion you came to from this thread...where did you get that psych degree, I want one...and the guy did get 3 acceptances, so those letters and his statement had to be pretty decent

IMO if you are so easily riled by individuals who are cutthroat about grades, you're going to be miserable in dental school. Every dental school student I know has said there are a certain number of gunners in each class. The person you are discribing would fit nicely into the gunner category. Also, even if this person gets into your dental school, its not as if you are the only two students there. Chill a bit and let the cards fall where they may.

Agree with most all of the above posts. However, to play devil's advocate, who knows what this person has done to irritate the OP? If it is merely the fact that the person works hard at grades, then the OP is out of line. But if it goes beyond that and the individual is dishonest, there is no room for that in dental school. In fact, I would say that at most of my interviews I was asked a hypothetical question about a potential ethical situation in dental school. Usually the question was along the lines of "what would you do if you knew your classmate was cheating"? The answer they wanted to hear in every instance was an emphatic "turn them in". Then they would ask, "but what if they were your good friend"?...etc., etc. It was quickly obvious to me that there is an apparent problem existing in dental schools already with regards to honesty and integrity of the students, and that they were trying to weed out these bad apples during the interview process.

Again, if the OP is just retaliating to the competetion of grades, or just the fact that their personalities clash, then he/she is out of line. But, if there is a deeper issue of moral integrity, maybe something should be done. Being in the OP's shoes, then, would be difficult, because I'm not sure if it is his/her obligation to take action against it.

Wow, i didn't expect this kind of reaction to this thread....

Clearly, people think that i'm some kind of tattle tail kid with no sense of a mature thought process.

I really thought that some people would at least give their own experiences about underclassman they knew that were obnoxious and rude. I go to a very small sized school, and people talk and everyone is figured out as either being cool or uncool (in terms of being friendly and unfriendly).

This person i was talking about is not the pinnacle of Satan, but he's definitely at the bottom of partner list for a group assignments. (also, what do you think of the guy who answers his cell phone in class... i have no respect for these people)

Anyways I know 4 other students interested in Buffalo, and I know they'll make great additions to the school.

I'm sure a lot of you people in this forum are not cutthroat at all. Everyone here are nice and help others with their studies.

if you even care, I have tutored at my school for 3 years, and help TA organic chemistry, and just started helping students with physics homework. I also do free reviews sessions for about 7 students in organic chemistry.

So before anyone judges me, judge yourself, because the person's who think that i am some jerk to hinder their chances at dental school, you best take a look in the mirror and see if anyone at your own school would do that to you because of your F'd up personality.

The reaction you received was due to how your post read. Anyways, rest assured that he will not be answering his cell phone in class while in dental school and that he will participate in group projects as most of them involve grades by the instructor and by the other members of your group. As for a study partner, you will have plenty to choose from and will be able to avoid this guy. Especially if your last names begin with very different letters. Regardless of how poor a fit the guy may be in your eyes, it is in your best interest to allow the school to find that out on their own.

Well, I can understand if you resent this individual for being self-centered and overly-ambitious, but to consider such a spiteful action (which, by the way, you sound like you're nice enough just to be joking about it... I hope!) doesn't necessarily make you look any better. I'm not going to advocate what youre doing, but I just wanted to say that your thoughts might not be unjustified depending on the severity of his/her behavior towards others.

There was this one time, some girl who wanted to go to dental school (the only other predental student in my entire class! I went to a small liberal arts institution) and I couldn't stand her for the same reasons. I definitely did NOT want her in the same dental school that I would attend, but I wouldn't sabotage her efforts in admissions either. You know what I mean, I'm sure you meant the same because you can't be THAT evil ( I mean, come on, if you give free tutoring, you're okay in my book ).

I would strongly suggest not sabotaging this person for several reasons.

1) I can see several ways that this could turn out very badly for you.
2) Do unto others as you would have done unto you.
3) You may just be reading this person wrong. I have to say that I probably seemed to be overly competitive my first couple of semesters in undergraduate, but I realized my sophomore year that it was partly because I was shy and partly because I came from an ultra-competitive family. Maybe this person has the same intentions. I really like people and like to study in a group now, I just never knew how my actions appeared to other people until it was brought to my attention. If you get to know this person, it may turn out that they will make a great study partner/ friend.

Just my 2 cents.

It's pretty cutthroat. Did this person do anything to you or others that is equivalent to your attempt at ruining their shot of dental school? I completely understand playing with these ideas in your head when you are really mad at someone. We are human and we can get mad. Was this your situation? Did you ever really truly consider following through with this?

I never really considered following through. I wrote this thread about a year ago, when "person" was showing no respect to his year classmates. My thoughts at the time were indeed fueled with anger. Hope you don't meet terrible people like this in your dental school, and I hope everyone holds hands and shares study material like good kids at Buffalo.
