I just received an email from an advisor to my med school about ordering scrubs and which size to get. The size chart they gave is as follows

Chest - X-Small(36-42), Small(42-46), Medium(46-50), Large(50-54), X-Large(54-52)
Waist - X-Small(28-32), Small(34-38), Medium(38-42), Large(42-46, X-Large(46-49)

Now Im a 170 pound male with an average build who pretty much always wear clothes medium size. However with these measurements I would be on the low end of X-Small. I can't see how this could be right but I was wondering if anyone knew if they measured anything differently or if you're just supposed to get ones that fit much much larger and tighten them

Your scrubs might be sized differently, but ours tend to be pretty small. I'm a 5'10" 170lb male, athletic (runner, not a body builder) and I need large scrubs. The top is way to tight across the chest and restricts arm movement otherwise.

Yea, I agree...I always have had problems with scrubs being on the small side.

How tall are you? Anything over 5'11'' and i'd say go for an XL.

The scrub sizes at hospitals SUCK!

I am 170lbs and 6'4" and its next to impossible to find a good fit. The hospital has no problem stocking plenty of XXXL pants with their comically large waistlines, but, for reasons beyond me, refuses to order ANY 'long' sizes. All the inseams seem essentially the same. I see plenty of tall fit people walking around the hospital...probably more than I see morbidly obese people in the gigantor scrubs. Why won't hospitals stock long inseam scrubs in M and L??????

thx for the help everyone....and velo - I absolutely love the picture...Da Bears!!

You can always go big on scrubs and be okay because of the drawstring waist-- if you go too small with them, and they're squeezing your ass and your you're chest; you're going to look like a pansy and the girls are going to be laughing their asses off at you. How do I know this? Because that's exactly what I would be doing. Go with size L at least.

velo: its just the way things work man. Not just with scrubs. Start working out your ankles because people are gonna be seeing a lot of them.

Scrubs are far better a bit larger than too small. If you are a 5 foot male who weighs 170 pounds, I don't believe that X-small is going to work for you. If you are a 6-foot male that weighs 170 pounds, L is going to be about right for you in terms of both length of the top and bottom. Scrubs fit very different than T-shirts. You may also want to have room to place things in your pockets without your scrubs becoming too tight. Tight scrubs are not very comfortable. Also, there is considerable variation between manufacturers and fabric types. Some scrubs shrink after the first washing.

Are you sure you've got a 36 inch chest and a 28 inch waist? 😛

alright so maybe you caught me embellishing it just a bit....its more like a 38 inch chest and 32 inch waist.....but that would still put me in the small to x-small categories...being 5-11 170 pounds that seems pretty ridiculous...im just gonna go with large

i have a 44in chest and a 34in waist and i go with M or L top and L bottoms. the thing they don't tell you with this is that there's a length for each size, and an XS would most definitely be quite short.
