I recently decided to take up Scuba Diving and received my certification. I am continuing to further my certification into advanced diving, and rescue diving. Is this something I could put on a medical school application and be thought as extracurricular or is it simply considered a waste of time?

Thanks.

How about you go for more certifications because you actually enjoy it? Not everything has to be about admissions...

Sweet, thanks, I'm not sure if I will end up involved in rescue diving, but I definitely wouldn't mind giving it a go if the opportunity presented itself.

I agree, I am going to further my certification whether or not it reflects positively on my application. I was unsure if it qualified as an extra-curricular activity due to sheer ignorance, in part because of my recent decision to go to medical school.

Thank you very much for clarifying and thank you for the timely response.

Yes this is good. I tryed for my certification, but the heater for the pool at my school was broke ;/ Never got to take that course

You should get your advanced in cave diving as well as wreck diving...

Soooo, much funner(the funnest?) than lameo rescue diving.

Yeah you should definitely list it on your application. I listed my scuba diving and I actually got to talk about it on one of my interviews. My interviewer was also a certified diver so we exchanged good diving spots.

PADI divemaster here. Have lots of specialty certs too. Did it cus I love it, but it did help on my app as it became a teaching EC as well as a hobby. Also made for interesting interview convos. HTH

SCUBA diving is great to talk about when you get questioned about your hobbies at your interview. I love telling them that I am a certified diver!

Here another diehard scuba diver. Got lots of specialty certs. as well and I recently started taking courses to get my rescue certs. too.

I consider it as an amazing hobby, and therefore I'd list it as an EC. Enjoy what you're doing.

I actually talked about scuba diving on one of my interviews. They asked me if I had fun non-medical related hobbies. I talked about fencing and scuba diving (I have an affection for ridiculously pricey off-beat sports). I also mentioned how it's a great way to release stress. =)

Scuba sounds like a definite thing to list, especially if it gives you something in common with an interviewer hah. And holy crap, there's swarms of premeds that scuba dive.

Rescue diver here.

I was asked about it at every interview I went to, and I'm currently looking to do a specialty in underwater photography!

It helps. It's something not everyone does and it's a hell of a lot of fun.
