SDN is too addicting? Or is it just Senioritis?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Once I had been accepted, I started to check SDN religiously instead of studying. I'm starting a thread when I should be practicing for a histology practicum. There's a serious lack of motivation at the moment. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Yeah---I use this thing during lecture daily.

Well, sadly enough I've been addicted to this site since highschool. Mostly just reading the forums, but I post now and then also. I'm also interested in the forums on craftster.org (I like to make things)... 🙂

This finals week coming up should be interesting with all the distractions.

Punchap you where a voyeur since high school. You should see someone about that.
hehehe

BTW.. it is addictive.. remember on Thankx given when the net was down... ohhhh man that was difficult.

Even though it is a great source for knowledge.. okay not all threads.. MAYBE NOT THIS ONE... but there are a lot of things I did learn.

I'm addicted and I haven't even been accepted anywhere yet! (Actually, my first interview is this coming Thursday (UNECOM) and my next interview is at NYCOM on 12/16, so I've been reading all the interview feedback and seeing what people have to say about the schools I'm applying to on these forums. Very interesting, but time consuming and distracting as well!)

Liar. We all are addicted. For me it is half SDN is cool, and half I am looking for anything to distract me (senioritis). Good luck.

Strangely enough, after that weekend, my interest in SDN waned. I think I realized how pathetic I was, checking five times a day to see if it had come back up 😳

recently was accepted about a month ago, and I think I will probally get the boot from my grad program, as I am about to pull C's in all my classes. Thats including a "W" I will get in Biochem. I got through senioritis, but "worthless grad school program "itis" is much worse, especially after the accpetance letter comes and my acceptance is in no way contingent on my finishing of the program. It is so hard to get yourself motivated to study hard for classes that dont mean ****. I have lost all motivation to do anything but booze it up with my friends. The fun will really start fall 2009. GO BUCKS!!!!!

I'm ashamed to admit this happened to me, too.

Mine SO always say ohhh again... you and your friends... and asks if anything new on here.. while she leaves from the room. hehehee

I go to SDN to avoid doing actual school work. My classes this semester don't really interest me, and I've been avoiding doing my masters thesis like the plague.

At least this way I'm on the computer. The alternative would be to watch TV or play video games. This seems somewhat educational.

I also spend a lot of time looking up stuff about life in med schools, books I'll need, what furniture I want for my new place, etc. I even scan ebay a few times a day for med school related stuff. I really feel like I should be doing something to get ready for this since it's less than a year away.

It's probably because med school is new and exciting to me, while grad school is just old and annoying to me now. Only thing to look forward to is graduation in May which is at Carnegie Hall in nyc.

I'm not lying. My posting and visits to SDN have dropped significantly in the past couple of months. I went from 5.48 posts/day to 5.32 posts/day, being registered for over a year now. That's a pretty substantial drop in a short amount of time.

In behaviorism I believe this is called extinction. Given your high frequency of response (behavior of checking this forum) and the contingent reinforcement of seeing interesting discussions or whatever, the behavioral contingency has become very ingrained. Since you occasionally log on and don't see anything interesting, or little activity, you are not always reinforced - it is somewhat unpredictable. This is called a variable interval schedule of reinforcement. Typically this results in a high response rate (eg. checking SDN several times an hour).

The Thanksgiving server down time meant that the interval during which you were not reinforced was longer than usual, perhaps explaining your lowered response rate. However, since this behavioral contingency is still present in your learning history, it shouldn't take long for you to be just as hooked as before 🙂 Variable time interval schedules of reinforcement are difficult to extinguish cause you're always wondering if your next response (ie. going to SDN.net) will be reinforced.

Wow, don't know where that came from! I am such a geek 🙂 (Well, I do have a behavioral psych exam in a few days so I guess I can sort of justify...)

cheers,

Yeah, something like that.

It will be interesting to see if your prediction comes true. I will guage my level of addictness by how much time I spend, as well as the level of frustration I feel when the server is down.

This must be a joke, and if it isn't, it sure reads like one
