Been a while since we've had one of these...

Start date TBD pending roster filling, but the goal is ASAP anytime after Thursday 4/24. Cycles will be 24 hour day/24 hour night with evening closes as long as there isn't strong opposition - let us know if you have a very specific closing time request, otherwise it'll probably be like...9pm or 10pm EST.

We may migrate the game to MU for roster filling and general modding and gameplay toolbox reasons. Haven't discussed it much yet but I'm personally in favor.

Your mods are myself, @kaydubs , and @supershorty

Details on game setup are below:

SETUP: Wolf Cube
x9 Vanilla Town
x1 Town Tracker
x1 Town Doctor | Even Cycle | Hidden Modifier on Flip
x1 Town Doctor | Odd Cycle | Hidden Modifier on Flip

x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Track, x2 Roleblocker) | Ninja x1 | Alignment Flip Only
x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Motion Detector, x2 Roleblocker) | Strongman x1 | Alignment Flip Only
x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Vigilante, x1 Role Cop, x1 Watcher) | Cycle 2+ | Alignment Flip Only

Important Notes

  • Mafia flips only show the alignment of the Mafia player, whereas Town flips usually show the full role of the Town player. The only exceptions are Town Doctors, who will only flip as Town Doctor and their modifier (Odd Cycle or Even Cycle) will not flip - see the last bullet point.
  • Mafia JOAT abilities do not cycle after they are used (they only get the stated ability uses).
  • Mafia can target Mafia with all role actions except the factional kill
  • Hidden Modifier stops the role's modifier from being revealed upon death and to investigatives - ex. Town Doctors will only flip as Town Doctor, so it will not be publicly revealed whether the role was Odd Cycle or Even Cycle

Relevant mechanics info
  • Day start.
  • Majority elimination will not be enabled during day 1 and is not required at any point for the elimination. Starting on Day 2 and until MYLO/LYLO, majority will be enabled at 12 hours after SoD (in 36/12s and 48/24s) OR at 24 hours after SoD (in 72/24s). MYLO/LYLOs are exceptions, during which majority will be enabled immediately.
  • If day ends >24 hours before the day's natural EoD, then night will be shortened and the next day will begin at the next instance of the game's SoD time. If day ends close to 24 hours (ex. 23 hours), night may be shortened at host discretion.
  • Tied votes will result in one of the tied players being eliminated at random
  • No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
  • Mafia may communicate any time, and often use a Discord server for mafia chat.
  • Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia factional kill is mandatory.
  • Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
  • Thread is locked during Night Phases.
  • Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO
  • Each individual player may make a maximum of 125 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
  • The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc).

Can we stay here pls? We gotta have a game here :sorry:
If the game is played here, SDN is automatically eligible for Season 13 next year.

*hides*
Reasonable arguments. We'll see how the roster filling goes! I admit I haven't actually looked at the setup at all yet to see how involved it is from the modding side

I'd be willing to run some smaller games here if there's interest too, we don't have to rely on this one 🙂

I seem to recall these games are usually flavor free, which cuts down on the work a lot

I think the previous ones were flavor light, but champs games don't have to be flavor free. Night results will be simplified of course, but I still like doing write ups.

I was more thinking about just the night action processing, vote tallying, tracking post counts, in combination with it being a bit easier to recruit players on MU vs having to have a bunch of people add accounts here.

Champs isn't flavor free tho, unless you're me and never get your death write up from your qualifier 😭

I saw and didn’t understand how one is supposed to do that. At least the way I do flavor, that would be impossible.
I assume they do the shell of the work and if they want to add a paragraph or two about how the cycle went prior to posting, they can.

Just no more ad-libbing all of it because most hosts lose interest in completion as soon as a team wins or sometimes even if they simply fall behind two cycles.

I hosted last season. They wanted a detailed flavor skeleton in advance, though necessarily all of the meat.
I suppose you could have something written for the death of each role and then fill other things in along the way. I've had some planned structure to some narratively robust games before. Just a lot of revision that happens depending on how the game is going.

Perhaps I will begin cold-calling upon students in the adjacent threads to participate.

Quick, everyone, hide your heads behind your laptops! I might not see you!
That’s how we used to recruit for the annual noob game lol. It worked.

That’s how I joined the WW crew. Lawpy tagged me.

forgive me for asking (especially if this isnt the place to ask), but what is this? haha. I'm reading the initial post and it's reminding me of "Town of Salem"?

feel free to delete this post if it throws off the thread! but I was just curious haha

Yes! It's a similar game to Town of Salem. Forum based obviously.

You should play!

Yes it is similar to Town of Salem! It's also called Werewolf (WW, usually the term we use here). Historically there have been games hosted here frequently, but that has dropped off over the last year.

There's a description here:
So, what is WW? (Credit to @Trilt)
WW - "Werewolf" - is a forum-based version of the classic party game "Mafia." You may have played it at camp at some point. Peruse the wikipedia entry and see if it looks familiar.

No? That's okay. Fundamentally, WW is a game of a small informed minority (the wolves) trying to kill off a confused, uninformed majority (the villagers). The villagers are, obviously, trying to figure out the bad guy wolves before they are all killed.

There is a simple day-night cycle to the game. During the day, all of the players talk together and decide one person that they believe to be a wolf. This person is killed - "yoten" - and removed from the game. At that point, whether they are wolf or village (or... other!) is revealed. During the night, the wolves plot together and decide on a villager to kill (who is, again, removed from the game).

Of course, we make this slightly more complicated, and if you want to read more check these links out:
Cyndia's post halfway down this thread is fantastic
An old noob game with a description and common rules
...but don't feel obligated to. Note when reading old threads and descriptions, the term "lynch" was historically used. It has now been replaced by "vote" or "yeet."

This game specifically is a practice game for a championship event hosted on another site that brings together players from many communities that run mafia games across the interwebs.
