the place i am most likely ranking number 1 is a program i haven't rotated at, so i was thinking of going back for a second look...the only thing is, i haven't done any ophtho rotations in about four months now, so my clinical skills (as well as my knowledge of ophtho) is pretty rusty...could it hurt me to do a second look? is this a time when you're expected to impress? my chair is already planning on calling them (in fact, he may have already done so) to tell them that they're my #1, so is a second look even worth it if they're already going to know that they're my top choice?

Are you talking about doing a rotation and hoping that it helps you for the match this year? Or, are you talking about going back to the program to look around at it again.

In either case, I would be careful to not look like you could be a demanding type of resident which hanging around the program "to check it out" might suggest.

I've always heard that it's a really good idea to do a second look (not a rotation, just an afternoon or whatever). Is this not the case? Do you come off as demanding or desperate for a spot if you do that?

If it's a program where it's likely a "top choice" for a great number of applicants, then a 2nd-look seems as though it would only serve to annoy them. If it's a smaller or middle-tier program where you're really looking for a best-fit and didn't feel like you saw enough on your interview day to know if it's a top choice of yours, then it's probably reasonable to take another look.

If you're just going back to try and impress them, I think it is more likely to affect your application negatively than positively. If you wanted to get a better feel about how they might react to your return, you might be able to e-mail one of the current residents and run it by them first....

It would to me.
