So I have my top 5 programs pretty much figured out in terms of the rank order. But I have no idea how far down my rank list I'm going to go down before I match. I was fortunate to get more interviews for my chosen specialty than I was expecting, but I know I'm by far no school's top choice.

So my question: Is it worth it to do a second look at a couple places that I know will not be in those top 5? I really have no idea how to rank the other programs on my list, and I think in my case, it could really matter.

Do it for yourself if you think it will really help, but it will not influence the program. Likely a waste of time/money.

If you think your interview went well, it is just another opportunity for you to blow it. It is impossible to really get an honest sense of a place in a day, and another walk through likely wont change your initial gut feeling.

Is there a polite way to decline a second look? I recently had a chief resident tell me that they thought I'd be a good fit for their program, and they are inviting me for a second look. I just replied that I drove around quite a bit on the day prior to my interview and also after the interview, so I think I have a good feel of the area. I hope this isn't off-putting or that it doesn't convey a lack of interest. The resident didn't respond, so hopefully it wasn't because I expressed anything wrong.

It actually would be fun to go see programs again (especially of top programs that I'm strongly considering), but I'm really low on cash at this point after spending thousands of dollars on interviews.
Just tell the truth.

"Dude...love the program, will be ranking it (#1/highly). Unfortunately I don't have the time/money to do a 2nd look at this time but wish that I did."
