How's the competition for applying for a three-year program with the Navy. I'm definitely considering applying for multiple reasons: my father was an Armed Forces career man, I would like to serve my country, not having to live like an indigent man for a couple of years to live in semi-opulence. I would have applied last year, but didn't get around to it until it was too late. Really never considered it until December of last year. Are DAT and GPA really that big of a deal considering the fact that I'm already in dental school? Are they going to want my first year GPA? Just wondering. I'm going to do well, because I mean to do so, but I was just wondering from anyone who's applied during their first year. What I'm looking for is a three-year scholarship. Does the 20K translate to the three-year or is that four-year exclusive.

First of all, there is an entire forum that you need to go to to get your questions answered. Look at the bottom of the Dental Forum and you will see the mildent forum. This will eventually get moved to that forum, but in the meantime I will answer for you.

Right now, the military actually is able to be selective in who they give scholarships to right now because there is a high number of applicants. So, yes, your DAT and GPA are important. If you have at least a 3.5 GPA combined college/post-grad and at least a 19 DAT, then you fall in the what was an automatic category. Yes, they will want your first year GPA. That will get calculated into your overall GPA. Now that they are able to be selective, I don't know how they are handling people who meet those criteria now. But, just because you are in dental school doesn't mean you are assured a scholarship. They only have a limited number of 3 year scholarships and they will select the ones who they feel will best fit their needs.

The 20k bonus. You can get it on the 3 yr scholarship, but you have to commit to a 4 year minimum active duty obligation. So, if you were only planning on joining to get the schooling paid for and get out, then taking the $20k signing bonus is not worth it because you would only have to commit to 3 years for taking a 3 year scholarship if the bonus is not taken.

Navy DDS has it right on. Scholarships have quite suddenly become popular. Not 2 years ago some of the services were having extreme trouble filling slots. I got a 3 year scholarship for the army in march and they were getting close to filling up by then, which was pretty much unheard of in the past couple years.

By the end of March they had closed Nursing for the year...must be an indication of the economy.
