Go ahead...being motivated by a personal or family health issue is really, really common
'sick
Thank you! The doc I work with has urged me caution so I don't alert any programs that my son is "sick" and/or that I will have something that could prevent me from being successful in medical school. But this is obviously something that has a huge impact on which programs I selected. I will tread with caution.

If you mention your son's health issues, it's fair game for an Adcom member to ask if you can handle the stressors and requirements of med school along with being the parent of a sick child. You won't be able to run home every day for crises.

Understood. I'm game for that. My husband will be staying home and my kiddo has been healthy and typical post repair and isn't expected to need any further surgical fun anytime soon.

As long as you've got that covered it's a solid topic. One of my favorite attendings was an engineer and then went to med school after he had a child born with a severe cardiac defect which required surgery immediately after birth. He was so grateful to the surgeon and team he felt like medicine became his calling. Got into a T10 school in hid 30's and was valedictorian. Great guy, almost inspired me to enter a field that would have completely wrong for me, lol.
