Hello,

While filling out the VCOM secondary I came across this question...

COLLEGE MISSION
VCOM is dedicated to educating students in many fields. Those disciplines in shortage in Virginia and the Appalachian region are of particular interest to VCOM. Please prioritize your top three of the following:

Family Medicine
Pediatrics
Internal Medicine
Emergency Medicine
Psychiatry
Ob/Gyn
Medical Research
Mission Medicine
Public Health

Although I am not quite sure which field of medicine I would like to ultimately pursue, I am curious of their inclusion of Mission Medicine. The school obviously wants to fill the shortage in the Appalachian region, so do the adcoms look favorably on mission medicine...or not? Just kind of sounds like a trick question. I'd also like to know what you guys think about the other disciplines listed...in the perspective of a DO adcom.

Hi. I'm filling out the VCOM secondary, too. I really don't like this question because I feel that it is tantamount to pigeon holing me as an applicant. I mean...Yes! Most DO's do go into primary care specialties...but there are plenty of them who don't. But I don't know why I'm complaining...I'm pretty sure I'll wind up in a pediatric subspecialty. Here's my ranking:

1. Pediatrics
2. Family Medicine
3. Psychiatry

i dont think its a trick question. they just want to see where your interests like as of right now. and i think it would be best if you answered it from your point of view, rather than the adcoms point of view lol.

(a couple of other secondaries also ask for what field in medicine one is interested in.)

good luck!

I understand what you're saying, but VCOM's mission is to produce primary care physicians who will work in underserved areas in the Appalachian areas.
