I see their reasoning that since yellow is the color seen, purple must be absorbed.

However, the light chapter in TBR distinguishes between emitted colors and reflected colors, explaining that only reflected colors (IE, those seen from objects you can't see at night) follow this rule. Emitted colors (IE, those you can see at night, like light bulbs, TV screens) absorb and display the same color. How do you decide in this case whether this is an emitted or reflected color? Is it just because the color was produced via spectroscopy? So spectroscopy works by producing reflected colors?

Reflected light is when light say hits an apple and we see red. Emitted light is the source; in this case the sun that hit the apple. For this problem, an outside source emitted light which strikes this reaction; compound 2 absorbs the purplish component and what is reflected is yellow.
