Hello All,

I am hoping to receive some advice on active steps one can take to find mentorship as a pre-med. I understand that, given my position as a pre-med, I will be limited on who I am able interact with to establish a mentorship relationship.

However, I personally feel that an MD mentor would greatly help with my medical school journey, especially my learning about the healthcare system and discussions on physician-patient relationships to optimize care.

Given this, any advice on how to continue to form these connections would be helpful. These are the action steps that I am currently taking with low yield:

- connecting with physicians in my local area on LinkedIn and seeking out an interview time to learn about their journey in medicine, leading up to their current career path/specialities
- shadowing at my local hospital (however the surgeon I’m shadowing is pretty busy and interviews applicants for their med school, so I’m not sure if it is appropriate to seek mentorship/recc letter from them)
- connecting with physicians on my research team at work (I want to tread lightly to not overstep boundaries and remain professional at work, so I am not sure if it is appropriate to ask them to be a mentor, but please let me know)

Again, thank you all for your time and patience with my questions.

Reach out to your school's alumni office. They are always looking for ways to get alumni to engage with the school. Ask the alumni office if they have any relatively recent grads (last 10-15 years) who have gone on careers in medicine. IF not, ask if there are any old-timers from the school who are now senior physicians. While those folks might not be as up-to-date about the admission process, they can tell you about what it is like to practice medicine and perhaps connect you to younger docs who have been through the process more recently. If your pre-med advisor has been on the job many years, they may also know doctors you can reach out to who were once where you are now. With Zoom, Facetime and the rest, even if you can't meet in person due to distance, there may be an opportunity for a fruitful mentorship.

A lot of organizations offer mentorship assistance with a national network. HPSA has a partnership with one organization, but I also encourage you to look up AMSA and SNMA.
