I'm currently a fourth year medical school, graduating in September, hopefully start residency in October or January. If not then in July. I'm looking for a mentor, attending or resident, becuase I've been struggling with understanding medicine as well as the whole logistics of being a medical professional. I feel like a mentor would help tremendously. Having a mentor has helped in previous experiences.

Uh what?
You are a student about to graduate...and you need somebody to teach you medicine.......before your residency that starts in October?

I understand I'm a total mess, I have to make changes. It's not only about medicine, but life as well,

No need to be disrespectful guys....

How about reaching out to the alumni coordinator at your school and ask them to put you in touch with someone? They are usually very helpful with getting students in touch with their graduates.

You guys need to be more direct in your responses. I'm utterly confused about what?

No I did not match, hoping to get into internal medicine.

I'll jump on the grenade. OP...send me a PM. This time...be more specific about what's going on. Please realize that I will not be offering medical advice nor will I be a tutor.

Lots of questions in your statement -- 1) Most schools graduate in May/June -- why are you out in September? That implies a few months of repeat/something upset the calendar. 2) Start residency in October/Jan? Umm, no, most places start July 1 -- so you'd be off cycle by a few months -- either you're doing research or again there are issues. 3) Struggling with understanding medicine? What area? Are we talking basic physiology/biochem -- You don't get where the Krebs cycle takes place or how ATP is manufactured? Or the patient handoff from EMS to hospital bed/clinic presentation to specialists? Or the inflammatory cascade to disease declaring itself to treatment options to risks/benefits? Be a little less vague. 4) Logistics of being a medical professional -- logistics implies entire support structure and actions on the scene -- if you're a 4th year, you should already understand by observation how this works or should have asked your residents how it works at the start of 3rd year -- if you want to be in IM, you need to get it together -- quickly. I have med school classmates who's first rotation July 1 was in ICU -- and they were ER interns. If you're asking these types of questions, you need to go talk with your Dean/school counselor/favorite professor to function check if you're ready -- don't expect someone on the forums to be able to really help you, especially when they have to pull info out of you like wisdom teeth ---

1.) yes I did take time off for my boards, failed shelf exams, and failed one rotation. I have a lot of issues. Low confidence, below average medical knowledge, just general life issues I don't want to get into right now. Ive sought and continue to seek help for them. I am improving thanks to God.
2.) we will see if I can start off cycle after I graduate in September. I will email programs etc, if not I am looking into doing research etc.
3.) I'm struggling mainly with presenting patients in a pertinent/useful fashion etc, I am looking up info online and asking questions about my performance to my resident and attendings. I struggle with basic science in general as well as my medical knowledge. Add to that patient care, it gets a overwhelming. Ive been asking and trying to figure out how to be more organized etc
4.) Yes I need to be more proactive and inquisitive with regards to understanding the logistics of day to day activities in the hospital.
thank you for your questions. it really helped me analyze things and look at them with more focus.
J4pac thanks for your help, I will get in touch.
Thanks everyone. I have a lot of work to do. I understand I am behind the curve etc. I am ready to do what it takes. even if it takes more time then usual.

@ibnrabah Can you delay graduation to May? I mean, why not - might as well use the extra months to improve your medical knowledge and whatever else you're lacking, obtain some positive LORs, and try to match this cycle 2015-2016 (if not categorical then TRI).
