Hey guys im looking for a little advice. I turned down the detroit mercy 7 yr undergrad/DDS program to attend a more prestigious university. Now im thinking about doing a Cell and molecular biology/Biomed engineering program where you gets a bachelors and masters in 5 years. Thing is, this program is really tough. I talked to a kid in it and he said is insanely hard to get through, but once you make it, your set. Im just concerned that my GPA may be lower than what the dental schools are looking for

So I guess what im asking is do dental schools look favorably on programs like these and realize that it is harder to get a high GPA in these programs? I mean, im really interested in this program but more in becoming a dentist.

Thanks

Turning down the program appears to suggest that "becoming a dentist" was secondary. The degree of difficulty of the program may be irrelevant unless there are no applicants from your field or none of those in the program are able to obtain respectable gpas. But why worry? In 5 years you may decide you have found your pot of gold.

No, it doesn't mean that I though becoming a dentist was secondary. It meant I wanted a true college experience by going to my dream school, I figured if im really dentist material, I will get through anyways. Right now im shadowing a dentist a few hours per month and just got a job at the dental school as a research assistant.

I just see the statistics of so many applicants having 3.8+ GPAs. Right now(first semester freshman year) im probably going to end up with a 3.1-3.2..I hope I can get it up next semester, but im taking calc 2, bio +lab, econ and physics +lab so it will be really tough (all are really hard at my uni)

Thanks for the advice though, I guess ill have to really crack down these next 3.5 years and see where I end up
